HTC in NYC – Baked Brooklyn, a cakey pilgrimage
Welcome to part two of my NYC adventure. So I promised cake, and here, my friends, is CAKE. I first heard about Baked Brooklyn about a year ago during a Sunday afternoon slob-fest in front of the Food Network, and a programme that featured their most famous invention The Brookster. A Brookster is a complicated bake. Part Brownie, part Cookie, 100% circle of circular, gooey, chocolatey perfection. Of course, I HAD TO GO THERE. My first piece of advice is, do as we did, and go for a late afternoon tea. Baked is a fair way out of the city, all the way in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We took a cab from Williamsburg just as the sun started to set, and consequently had the most ridiculously romantic cab journey I have ever, and probably will ever take. As the sky turned pink, Manhattan was painted the most beautiful colour as it sped by on my right, and we watched the sun set behind the Statue of Liberty as we snaked along the Hudson River. I said ridiculous, right. What We Ate The Brookster: Oh my days, the Brookster. It’s circled with a perfect brownie-edge crisp, and gets gooier and gooier as you munch towards the middle. It was like a cakey UFO of pure awesome. Need to make some soon, although I fear the original will always be the best. Pumpkin Cheesecake Slice: This was my favourite thing. The flavour was delicate and creamy and the chopped walnut on top set it off perfectly. Peanut Butter Crispy Bar: Think rice krispy square pimped to the absolute maximum, with a crunchy peanut butter texture throughout. So. Freaking. Good. Brown Sugar Blondie: the brownie’s lighter little sister. A perfect balance of sweet and salt, chewy, nutty perfection. What We Drank Spiced hot chocolate, made from melted chocolate of course, garnished with a giant vanilla marshmallow that they make in house. This is afternoon tea, but not as we know it. As I write this, my first experiment from the Baked Elements book I bought in store is steadily rising in the oven. It’s a Triple Rum and black pepper bundt cake. By the time you’ve read this, I may have done bad things to it. (Tip: If you buy a recipe book in the USA, get yourself a set of American size measuring cups. I got a Tala all purpose one which has simultaneously taken all the pain out of conversions and looks awesome on my baking shelf next to my vintage scales. Win.) http://dlvr.it/4TX0xM
Superfans? Brooksters!
Joe's music is finally played by Singapore's radio station, after all those spamming, texting and calling.
BROOKSTERS/SUPERFANS FTW!
This is how we roll, Joe.
