Song Review: Frank Zappa - "Revised Music For Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra” (Live, Sept. 18, 1975)
Whether he was dabbling in rock ‘n’ roll, jazz or classical, Frank Zappa always wound up composing what sounded like Zappa music first and whatever genre second. Bizarre time signatures, gonzo tempo changes and and insane levels of creativity were always at the fore, whether rendered by axe, sax or violin.
The previously unreleased "Revised Music For Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra” makes this point early and often across its seven-minute runtime. Recorded in 1975 with the so-called Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra, consisting of classical musicians and longtime Zappa collaborators such as Terry Bozzio, Ian Underwood and Bruce Fowler, the piece moves from sweeping orchestral sections to quirky marches to quick detours that wouldn’t seem out of place in a “Tom and Jerry” cartoon effortlessly and seamlessly.
It’s one of several previously unavailable pieces set to appear on the three-disc, 40th-anniversary edition of Orchestral Favorites, which arrives Aug. 30.
Though it’s strictly classical, "Revised Music For Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra” is also obviously a creation of Zappa’s mind. Symphony-going snoots will probably hate it; adventurous Zappa fans will adore it.
Grade card: "Revised Music For Low-Budget Symphony Orchestra” (Live - 9/18/75) - A
