Look, I very much enjoy HBO's The Last Of Us and what it's trying to do as it's own thing, the care that was put into it by Craig Mazin & his crew and seeing this world & characters again, despite thinking it was unneeded at first, but and there's a BIG but...

Bruce Straley not getting any credit or even one cent from it despite being the co-creator of that franchise is bothering me. Neil Druckmann has clearly done a lot for it, despite what some haters would like to think, but let's not forget about Bruce Straley who also was one of the main reasons we are able to see this franchise flourish. (And who also gave us Uncharted 4 which was a fantastic game.)

HBO & TLOU crew, give credit to Bruce Straley for the work he did on & for this franchise.

In addition to reinforcing the theme of survival, the upgrade and scavenging systems in The Last of Us also provide a natural progression to player abilities based on behaviors the designers definitely want the player to practice: careful exploration of each environment, sparing use of one-use items, and frequent weapon cycling as different needs arise. The two work very well together, and even when the player has plenty of raw materials on their side, it never quite feels like they have enough to handle anything they encounter, striking an interesting balance overall.

During the earliest section of The Last of Us, even when the gameplay is still not combat or stealth focused, the level design is still establishing it’s core rules- look for light in stark contrast, yellow/yellow highlights lead to your goal, etc. While the primary intent behind this section is to establish Joel’s character and the backdrop of the larger world, it is no accident that these moments of teaching are so subtly presented as well.

THE ART OF THE LAST OF US by Naughty Dog and Dark Horse (book flip through by Borislav Vakinov)

Last year (in June) I bought the art book for the first THE LAST OF US game and I wanted to make a nicely filmed and edited flip through with the soundtrack of the game since then. I think this has to be simply the BEST art book ever released by Dark Horse and it's definitely a purchase that I am most happy about. What more is there to say? ...well apart from the quite obvious fact that THE LAST OF US is an example of an immersive and emotional video game experience done the proper way  in every possible respect, and that it has a very, very, very special place in my heart. For goodness' sake, I even bought a used PlayStation 3 last year just to be able to play this great game!! I hope you'll enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed glancing and reading through the pages of this masterpiece of an art book for hours and hours on end. I absolutely love and held in a very high place THE LAST OF US and everything is has to offer me as a gamer and as someone who appeciates quality art, video games and experiences. It's certainly one of my favorite video games of all times and I say this in all seriousness.
