🌑 BRUCE SWEDIEN IS DEAD 🌑

last night, November 16, 2020, Bruce Swedien, 86 years old, historical sound engineer of Michael Jackson from the movie "The Wiz" (1978) to the album "Invincible" (2001), left us, as well as one of the most competent record companies who the history of music will never tell.

Swedien, who had been hospitalized weeks ago following a fall, had contracted Covid-19 in hospital. Roberta Swedien, spread the news of the disappearance

"My father, Bruce Swedien, died peacefully last night, November 16th. He was 86. years old. A legend in the music industry for over 65 years and a 5 Grammy winner, he was known for his work with Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and many others. She had a long life filled with love, great music, great boats and a beautiful wedding. We will celebrate that life. He is loved by everyone. "

If there was a Mount Rushmore of studio engineers, his head would be on there. Bruce Swedien, the legendary engineer of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and dozens of others, died last night at 86. I got to interview him a few years ago when he had a new book out and he was a charming guy who had plenty of insight for those who wanted to follow in his footsteps. He also kindly signed my copy of Thriller. RIP.

As a kid who was just discovering words like “production” “produced by” and “mixed at” and “mixed by”...... THIS was a turning point in my life. Part of it was that in 1979, just like what would happen later with Beats Headphones, there was a headphone “thing” going on. My pair was them brown Koss joints from Radio Shack! It was in THOSE headphones, that I was mesmerized by MJ’s backgrounds on Rock With You. Blown away by where the percussion sat in the mix on Working Day And Night. Transported into analog heaven by Greg Phillinganes keys On I Cant Help It ( Stevies writing of course). Them horns on Burn This Disco Out, That “drop the music, but leave the percussion and toms” fade on Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough. Hell, MJ’s first ALL falsetto lead vocal on the same tune❗️ Happy 40th. Thank u @quincydjones and #bruceswedien - For the sonic vision that would set the stage for Thriller. It’s a complex compelling performance. The tone is spot on. Enough snap on the snare but not too thin that it enters Ska/James Brown crack snare territory. The amount of reverb #BruceSwedien applies is SPOT on perfect. The performance However is timeless like a tuxedo. Or a pair of chucks. Or jeans and white t shirt. It literally gives MJ his dna. You know what it is ONE SECOND in. Its creator, Jazz/funk great #NduguChancler (mind you on a GAZILLION other hit songs) passed away today. Giving all due respect and praise to the drummer that sparked a revolution of dance madness breakbeat mania. Rest easy king!
