"From Skins to Cloth"

I love this title from one of the readings we had studying the origin of clothing.  In this modern age I don't think most of us would even think where clothing came from,  its evolution and development.  We usually take clothing for granted not knowing that making these fabrics turned in to clothing is not an easy process.  It is exciting to study the development of clothing and as I go along the process of learning I am having a better and deep grasp on its diverse history.

According to archaeologist and anthropologists,  the earliest clothing likely constituted fur,  leather,  leaves,  or grass that were draped,  wrapped,  or tied around the body.  Knowledge of such clothing remains inferential,  since clothing materials deteriorate quickly compared to stone,  bone,  shell and metal artifacts.  Archaeologist have identified very early sewing needles of bone and ivory from about 30,000 BC,  found near Kostenki, Russia in 1988.  Dyed Flax fibers that could have been used in clothing have been found in a prehistoric cave in the Republic that date back to 36,000 BP. 

BS Clothing Technology is a course in design,  materials and processes for the production of clothing to meet the needs of individual,  families and the society.  A program that I am taking right at the moment to put together all the knowledge I need in becoming a designer or a business individual in the near future.  Whichever field we chose to specialize in,  understanding its roots is the most important.  History is studied to interpret the past, understand the present and to prepare for the future.
