I love in “The Zeppo” when Xander compares himself to Jimmy Olsen and Giles doesn’t get it, and then Cordelia comes over and insults him by comparing him to Jimmy Olsen, and he’s so pleased that they were on the same wavelength that it takes a second for him to realize she’s insulting him. Their relationship is based a lot on physical attraction, but in the second half of S3, after they’ve broken up, you can see that they do understand each other.

so to recap the end of btvs season 6:

the catalyst for willow's humanity being restored is the power that giles gives her (his plan all along) and the one that ultimately stops willow from destroying the world is not buffy -- the friend who has literally always been in her corner, the one who has been saved by willow's friendship and vice versa more times than i can count -- but xander.

meanwhile buffy is stuck in a ditch for the whole finale and comes out of it resolved to (looks at notes) be a better big sister/mother figure.

xander feeling sorry for himself at the end of s6 only makes me more certain that he is and always has been functionally fucking useless in this plot

I had seen ATS more recently than BTVS S3 and I had forgotten just how much they did with Cordelia/Wesley. I remembered it as a couple of scattered flirty moments, but instead it’s every episode. Which is funny because in ATS they’re each other’s annoying coworkers who are best friends only because they don’t know anyone else. But the relationship is very weird in S3 because like. She is a high schooler! Leave her alone! Get a job!
