March 20th 13:54pm Wedding Day Today was the wedding of Yin and Thad, Yin is Grandad's niece. We had to wake early as the reception was starting at 8am. It was a mad rush to do hair and make up and get into our traditional clothes but we made it. We were picked up from the hotel and taken by taxi just a few minutes down the road to Utopia Hall where the reception was being held. The driver (also a friend of Yins) told us that she wanted us to wait for Yin and made us stay outside, he was a bit unclear, I guess due to the language barrier, but when Yin and Thad arrived we got shoved in line behind her and her family to walk in as part of the bridal party. I was not expecting it and it was all pretty intense. There were so many people watching us, taking pictures, there was a photographer and a full film crew with sounds and lighting which was a bit intimidating, but I just went along with it, it was good fun! We got placed around a table with some other guests who didn't speak english, but they seemed very nice. There were pretty little cakes and Laphat on the table and some waiters served glasses of ice cream to everyone. The ice cream was really refreshing but a bit strange to be part of a wedding breakfast-but who says no to ice cream? When people had finished the ice cream the waiters brought more, and more, it was a continous flow of ice cream, I didnt even finish my first one and I was watching some people go through three or four glasses! Whilst we ate, Yin and Thad were having lots of photos taken with close family on a big stage at the front of the hall. She and everyone else looked so beautiful. She was wearing a sky blue silk gown covered in shimmering crystals with fresh white flowers in her hair, she actually resembled a disney princess, I envy her perfection. Everybody else was dressed in brighlty coloured longyi with so many different patterns, most of the girls were sparkling with crystals and gold jewellery, it was amazing to see. Khaing arrived in a beautiful silver longyui and she looked so pretty. The ceremony itself was really short and involved the exchange of rings and then an exchange of some white flower garlands, I think they may actually already have married in another reception a day or two ago, and this was just the celebration with friends and family. Meryl and me decided to go for a wonder outside for some fresh air, where we were met by lots of people who were also attending the wedding. Before long people were crowding us asking to have their picture taken. It was so strange to have so much attention, purely because we look so different. But I really didn't mind they were lovely people. None of them spoke English but we sat and took photos and silly selfies with the little children who were excited to see us too. I guess we will be all over a few Burmese Facebook newsfeeds this evening! A little street food stall pull up outside the reception so we got some chilli cabage, which was amazing and some green mango before heading back inside.
