Anyone who knew her would describe Buffy Knowles as a ditz. Sweet, yes, popular and outgoing, absolutely, but a bit too optimistic for her own good. Until the school year started again, and Buffy returned from summer vacation as a whole new person. Still sweet, still popular, still head cheerleader, but different. Jaded, sharp, too smart for her own good, jumping at shadows and looking entirely haunted.
What they didn't know was that Buffy had gone on a camping trip with her family that summer, and that her camping trip had ended in tragedy. A man, faster than she could really see, coming out of the trees and ripping out their throats, feasting on their blood, somehow missing Buffy hiding under their car until he was gone. That was when Buffy Knowles learned that vampires were real, and when she decided that she was going to kill them – before they could kill her.
