30 Days of Pride Books (with @draconiclore)
Day 5 & Day 7
Brownstone by Samuel Teer & Mar Julia
Bunt! by Ngozi Ukazu & Mad Rupert
A quick catch-up post with two YA graphic novels. Brownstone is a coming-of-age story about a teen reconnecting with her estranged father and his culture; Bunt! is a comedy about college art majors forming an impromptu softball team for a chance at a scholarship. Rather different, but both very good, depending on what you're in the mood for.
1 down, hopefully at least 99 more to go!📗🧶
@ngoziu I'm a longtime Check Please fan, and I finally read Bunt! today and LOVED it! I was wondering if there will ever be audio versions released of either story. I think my partner would really enjoy both of them, but due to a traumatic brain injury, looking at words gives him migraines, so audio is his main way of interacting with media. (I'm sorry if there are already audio versions and I'm just not finding them--but in that case, I'd really appreciate a link!)
P.S. Check Please fans, I think a lot of us have been sleeping on Bunt!, and it's a great story! It's got Ngozi's trademark brand of ensemble cast, with a much more cynical view of college but still a deep appreciation for the oddball friends it's possible to make while playing a college sport. The cast is more textually queer than in Check Please, and the ending has more twists. It's shorter than Check Please, so you spend less time with the characters, but that just makes it a great read when you don't have time for a big commitment!
Wahoo I got a book

Happy Pride/Wrath my loves!
It's Gemini season now, which means some very important birthdays in my life. Above is the picture I drew for my brother's 40th birthday this past Sunday. Not only do I have to celebrate this milestone, but also he just got married to his love so things are going well for him! To many more, I raise a cold glass of root beer.

Ngozi Ukazu, from Bunt!
*I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review (and then checked out the hardback from the library...) Summary from Goodreads*
Molly Bauer's first year of college is not the picture-perfect piece of art she'd always envisioned. On day one at PICA, Molly discovers that—through some horrible twist of fate—her full-ride scholarship has vanished! But the ancient texts (PICA's dusty financial aid documents) reveal a loophole. If Molly and 9 other art students win a single game of softball, they'll receive a massive athletic scholarship. Can Molly's crew of ragtag artists succeed in softball without dropping the ball?
I absolutely loved every moment and page of this graphic novel! Outstanding characters, laugh out loud humor, relatable stories, and artwork that is so fun to look at. This has all the great teamwork vibes of classic underdog stories plus the quirkiness of art school students. Where else will you get a proud furry on a softball team?! There are romance side plots, lots of "stick it to the establishment" energy, and a charming setting with some sinister undertones. I love the diverse cast of characters and how well rounded they all are. I read through this so fast and was cheering the team on the whole time. A must read!
OUT NOW!
(side note: but the coach, aka Molly's best friend, gives me such Coach Ukai energy! but instead of smoking he's forever buying pizza for the team lol. also also I love Kavi and their comic porn hustle. I love everyone in this. a++++ characters)
