November 16, 2025 - Burchell's Coucal (Centropus burchellii) Found in parts of southeastern Africa, these cuckoos live in savannas, the edges of forests, thickets, and wetlands. They eat various invertebrates and small vertebrates, including insects, spiders, snails, lizards, snakes, frogs, mice, small birds, and eggs, as well as some fruit. Foraging in dense vegetation and on the ground, they sometimes capture prey as it flees grass fires. Males build messy, usually domed, nests from grass, twigs, and leaves in grass tufts, reeds, trees, bushes, or other dense foliage. Though both parents feed the chicks, males may do a larger share of the work and likely do most of the incubation.
