I talk at nauseam about the unaddressed racism from homestuck’s history, plenty do, along with the ableism, weird vriska jokes, etc, and we all apparently  ignore the elephants in the room for the sake of shitposts and a kinetic novel game from the quirky eboy behind them. 

This isn’t a “don’t get into HS or your bad” post, it’s a “If you’re a homestuck, you have no room to judge the hype of another fandom appearing and act like people can’t separate their interest in a franchise from the shitty takes of a creator when yours has barely apologized or learned” post.

So basically a handful of folks are mad that Sarah Z didn’t try messaging What Pumpkin before putting out a video about HS that featured shady business practices, which took up not even the whole video, and the essential logic is:

 “Well, Sarah, you have clout! Other people wouldn’t have gotten responses like they haven’t, but because you’re known you should’ve totally known that you would’ve gotten some direct answers!”

Even if she didn’t have a platform, yall really out here saying that she would’ve gotten responded to. What if she didn’t get responded to? What would your complaints be then? The fact that she didn’t brown-nose the mistreatment of artists and that she was encouraged to make a follow up video? And you think that that with the legal threats in between are justifiable? That being talked down to is fine because she should understand?

God, people are fucking nerds.

If you came out of that video and ignored how people treated her editor, how ex wp employees were treated, the lies and blatant manipulation in the emails because because you’re focused on anything being said at all?

It’s interesting to compare Friday Night Funkin to Homestuck, because while  both creators have flaws as people who’ve had their share of bad jokes or past content, I respect the fnf creators’ efforts of continuously pressing how a mlm identity exists between two characters as not a joke (while originally framed as such) to shut down chuds who are blatantly anti lgbt, and at least being able to acknowledge alternate timelines in a way that doesn’t need a pretentious essay. 

On the other side, I’ve been into HS for 6 years where information loves to be vague enough for chuds to still rebuttal, and Hussie continues to never say or clarify a thing about June since the 2019 (the toblerones also framed as semi-jokes themselves) while letting his community fight itself, despite HS loving to bank itself as being improved from it’s more arrogant era.

Idk, I just find it funny that the newgrounds ddr game’s impressed me more with it’s active openness to support queer fans without feeling selective in only a month...then there’s Homestuck.

Nothing beats the awkward anxiety that was having to suddenly "host" a hs podcast in front of a live audience the literal day after beyond canon's announcement to the internet. Good, great times.

Idk its just kinda awkward that I pass by the venue a lot since its in my hometown and my first thoughts whenever I see it are "damn, 2019 existed" and how I looked like I was "dying on stage". Welp.

Also someone on reddit made a livepost during to catch any juicy news and my only mention on that public page is how I had third wheel energy which. Kinda made things start to hit after a few days about how I wish that entire thing went better. Rough times, man.

You can really tell who didn't watch the Sarah Z follow up video because everyone with half a mind understands how fucked the situation is while people who’ve been stuck in an echo chamber that demonizes any critique on Homestuck’s practices are complaining about it regarding things not even related to the video (which was about artist mistreatment, threats -- not even homestuck’s first time threatening legal action on someone, the confirmation of bad practice, and Hussie specifically responding and even encouraging a follow up video in the emails).

Two years ago i was the kind of person that would squint and complain about people who would make hs characters poc and have different hair textures and shapes cus it wasn’t “canon” or accurate, and stuff like that also made me blind to the problems of the comic and how those problems alone affected how people treated people of color in the community, their art, art OF them, ideas, etc.. 

Now i’ve grown up and realized i a. was being influenced by the white of this community, and b. it was the internalized racism dfjlska

I severely regret that and I’m glad I didn’t stay in the rabbit hole, but it also makes me viscously aware that the same thing still happens today and that this fandom is far from making the most strides that it can to change those forms of racism.

Honestly, Hussie should make a post acknowledging behaviors and the way that he's influenced things as the guy in charge, bc like. At this point I'm indifferent about 'what is canon?' shit. I want the lingering racism and ableism to be addressed instead of another selfie.

The most given was the Skaia dot net and caucasian jokes for specific situations. What about the whole package? The proof *and* action of change, instead of softening anything with just time. At least Jenna Marbles the elephant in the room before vanishing into oblivion again.

Maybe i ironically get irked about being told how canon my shit is bc people will say that I, as a black trans creator, have to take the word of a guy who made jokes about welfares checks, among other facts on resume, but who knows.

Like okay ty for pointing out that capitalism is bad and that you can acknowledge lgbt in the comic. What about poc and the way that the dynamic between hs and them hasn't change. The fact we've had multiple She-ra staff situations brushed off cus oooooh toblerone!! Waiting.
