it would have been so much better for the plot if they had gone in a harry potter direction for will.
walk with me: will knows he’s connected to the hive mind, and he knows that vecna will always be able to use him if he is. nobody’s saying it, but they all know there’s a possibility of will dying if they don’t find a way to kill vecna without killing will. will resents that nobody is acknowledging that, even though they do love him (and secretly, mike is just ignoring it because he refuses to believe that will could die for good). will, because he thinks it’s the right thing to do, prepares to die, just like harry potter is passively suicidal near the end of the series. they have that in common: they’d do it for those they love.
outwardly, mike is the leader. he’s the heart. and part of that is because of will. he’s also focused on helping el get ready to defeat vecna. she’s the one he seems to be concerned about. he thinks will’s fine, or ignores the truth, and so when will’s plan is revealed, he’s taken completely by surprise. now he’s panicking to make sure will doesn’t sacrifice himself. this would highlight the difference between mike’s relationship with el and will: he unconsciously hides his emotions from el, because he thinks that what she needs is for him to be calm. but in regard to will, he lets go and is honest about some, if not all, of his feelings. he doesn’t feel the need to hold back, and he doesn’t have the capacity to hide how devastated he is by will being ready to die (a deeper look into mike’s mindset would be that will has lied to him again. he’s betrayed him. and that’s exactly what it feels like to mike).
i would go even further to say that an approach like this to will’s plotline would have explained his search for signals and advice, and his willingness to flirt with mike. this would have made so much more sense!?!??! he feels less guilty for doing these things because he thinks he’s going to die anyway, so what’s the harm, right? maybe mike would hate him for it, but he doesn’t have to deal with that if he’s dead. he believed he was being selfish, but he also believed it wouldn’t matter in the end.
