It had been over 24 hours since Lily had gone missing, he checked everywhere, Mungo’s, muggle hospitals, jails, even the Ministry in case they just took her without any kind of warning. He looked everywhere he could while he took care of Harry as best as he managed, but he could not find her.

Lily had gone missing and the world seemed darker than before.

James thought of every possibility, he even phoned Petunia to see if by any chance Lily had managed to wonder to her sister’s place, that’s how desperate he was. He couldn’t let anything happen to his wife, he had failed to protect her once already, he couldn’t fail again.

After not sleeping a wink in more than a day an idead popped up, a nagging idea that he could not get rid of and that seemed the only solution at the moment.

Leaving Harry with his mother one more time, James apparated to Knockturn Alley, to a place he hadn’t visited in a while and entered the bar. The clientele were far from the ones James would like, but he thought it was fitting, after all that’s were Peter’s information came from when he used to spy for them. Maybe that web of information could prove to be useful once more, if the other wizard was willing.

Approaching the bar he sat and waited until Peter was near him before he spoke, “Can we talk?” was all he could say while his brain screamed that there needed to be another solution. “Please?”

They were free.

Remus had been pretty certain they would have to be set free, just as he had told those who had tried to question him. The logical part of him had known that. The louder part of his brain, though -- the part that caused his blood to rush to his head and anxiety to course his veins -- had fretted that it would never happen. That they would continued to be set up for something none of them would ever do, until the Ministry discovered all their secrets. Remus’ big one would come out 23rd January. He would be subject to harsher questioning, the rights to werewolves so much less and suspicions against him no doubt raised once they knew he was intrinsically Dark.

Remus had been brought up first, apparently still seen as the lesser threat of the four of them, despite the fact that Fleamont Potter had managed to confirm they were all allowed to go. He wasn’t coping too well with waiting on his own.

“Pete--” he darted forwards as soon as his friend appeared. They had only been able to briefly see each other before. “It’s over. Are you okay? I’m so sorry. Fuck. It’s over.”

At some point, it had become habit that whenever they had homework that involved reading, Remus would read it out loud. He sat on Peter’s bed, A Guide to Advanced Transfiguration open on his lap as he went through the chapter on conjuring complex objects, made of multiple materials. “...Common errors with complex Conjuration are: conjuring only a frame of the object, rather than the whole; conjuring the object in only one material, such as a chair with wooden cushions; and failing to conjure the object to the correct scale. To master this, the caster must focus on the space they wish the object to fill and fully visualise the object.” He paused for a break, both because it was good to have some time to process the information and because his throat felt a little scratchy. The Transfiguration NEWT students had mastered some simple Conjurations already, such as the glass Remus made appear in his hand, and the water which flowed from his wand into it. “You still with me?” he checked, giving Peter a nudge. “She’ll make us do an essay on this next week.”

Lily was home, she was safe, she was more or less okay and she was pregnant.

James could not believe it, he thought he was still dreaming, like at any moment he would blink and she would disappear, but every time he date to sleep and wake up, she was there. Breathing slowly, healing, creating a life inside of her.

A lot of things passed through James’ mind while Lily healed, but the only thing aside relief he felt was gratitude.

He knew he had promised to stay away, but he couldn’t, something called him back to that bar, and he wouldn’t take no for an answer. He moved quickly, not letting Peter, or anyone, a chance to protest.

He entered the pub, and went behind the bar, just hugging his former friend. No other agenda, not ulterior motive, just a grateful, simple hug. “Thank you for bringing them home.”

James found Peter next to the Shrieking Shack as they agreed upon, usually people tried to stay away from that place during the festivities so it was the perfect place to meet without losing yourself in the crowd.

He smiled at his friend as he approached the meeting place, “And as usual, I’m late, aren’t I?” he teased to his old friend, his brother, as he reached the meeting point, “Been waiting long?”

James went to Peter's room and knocked on the door, he had missed him deeply and hadn't had a time to him alone. It was fun when the four of them where together but separately they had such different interactions that sometimes it caught him of guard but enjoyed all the same. "Pete, are you decent?"
