There had been many women in Jayce’s life. He had took many to bed in his time, loved them for a short time and moved on. Things had been different with Sybella Mooton. She had captured his attentions in the way nobody else ever had, and if her father would have allowed it, he would have married her. As it stood, the Knight of Ninestars wasn’t enough for her, with no noble title to lavish on the woman he loved, and she had been given to the old Lannister widower. He had been furious, but there was little she could do.
He couldn’t stop himself from gravitating to her side. It wasn’t her fault, after all, and to punish her would only be to punish himself. “My Lady Lannister,” he started, reaching out to take her hand and leaning down to brush lips over the back of it. “It is good to see you well.” One small squeeze of her hand and he relinquished his hold. “And how fares your new husband?” It physically pained him to enquire about her husband, but he had to, on the off chance he had died and Jayce just hadn’t heard about it yet. He was wicked for thinking such things, for trying to will it so, but he didn’t care.
