    She rubbed a hand on Carter’s arm, offering him a small apologetic smile. “I only mean, in the long run, it’s something that should be considered.”

     “I’m not--” Carter paused, took a deep breath. “I don’t even want to consider it.” He shifted his gaze from Mara to their companion, the person they were trying to help. “It’s your call, really.”

      “Where did you learn how to do that?” Carter couldn’t mask the impressed look that moved over his face.

After a full day of looking into his last lead, Carter was tired. “Weather’s about to turn,” he said, eyes cast toward the sky. He wished it would just be rain, but the charge in the air said otherwise. There was going to be a storm.

“I dunno about you, but I’d rather not get caught out in it.” He turned his attention to Rose.

“My job is to keep you safe. And you’re making my job very difficult right now.” The last part he said through clenched teeth.

     He wished she hadn’t said that. He just wanted to relax, not actively think about hunting something or putting a spirit to rest. Carter took in a deep breath.
