“Oh, God. Lori. Lori. Something is coming. Something bad is coming.”
Two doors down up the hall from where Shane sat in the living room, afforded a place to sleep inside thanks to his heroics, Carl was breathing on his own, safe and sound. Carl was going to survive, thanks to Otis' sacrifice and Shane's selfishness. That the kid was going to live should be the only thing that mattered now.
But Otis' death wasn't sitting quite so easy on his conscience. It was only hours ago that he'd shot the other man to ensure his own survival. Since then, Shane had gone through the motions on autopilot. Coming back, offering explanations, showering, picking at his dinner - all of it ran together, save for that one moment Lori looked at him from Carl's bedside and told him, Stay.
And yes, Shane had stayed, but he hadn't slept. He'd been sitting up for two hours since the house went still and dark, perched on the edge of the couch, when Carl's door creaked open and someone stepped out. Hand falling from where it had been rubbing over his head, Shane squinted, trying to make out which Grimes it was. "Everything alright?"
"The baby isn't going to survive in a world like this."
