malia found this time of year to be both painful and nostalgic in a way that made her also feel warm. it was always her mother’s favourite time of year because of traditions that they had made when she was a kid, things hadn’t been the same since she got sick but malia had always tried to keep them throughout the years to give her mother the sake of normality. it was different now that she was gone, but there were still some things that stayed the same. she had been working at the clinic today this was the time of year where a lot of the kids ended up twisting their ankles due to the snow, she had just finished up her last sprain before she walked outside on her break. it was snowing again, she lifted her head up to the sky feeling flecks of snow on her nose and cheeks. in the distance, you could hear children laughing, grabbing their tubes used for summer and now for winter for completely different reasons. she smiled at the sight walking over towards them to be there just in case. she had watched one kid trek up the small hill yelling below at his friends to watch out because he was going to go really fast. they had their phones out to video record it and malia had thought about when she was a child how much fun it was to do the same with jillian and koa. they had raced each other to see who could go down the fastest, it might have caused some fights but everything had always been smoothed over a cup of hot chocolate and peppermints.
she had watched the kids for a while who had been doing a pretty good job of dodging the tube she started to walk away for a moment not wanting to go back home but not knowing what else to do. she felt this feeling of just wanting to remember what it was like to be a kid again, when the only worry was about whether or not your snowman was better than the other or if your snow angel looked just right. malia had walked over to find a perfect patch of snow that hadn’t been stepped on and she took a big deep breath before closing her eyes and falling back into the snow, it was cold, some of it getting into her snow jacket but she laughed at herself and she started to move her arms to attempt and make a snow angel. nostalgia at it’s finest.
