HIS THROAT FEELS HEAVY & DRY ALL OF A SUDDEN. One foot already stands on the threshold, ready to make its way out into the ominous night air , where anything might lurk in the shadows. A faint copper gleam surrounds the safe house; traces of a protection spell.
You died. Her voice echoes in his head, pounding like a neverending drum. Concern is evident in those eerie words. A similar kind of WORRY appears upon Remus’ weary features, but he tries his utmost best to suppress it as he cups her cheek with the palm of his hand.
“ No , no — it won’t come to that, Dora. You know what they say about dreams — they’re unreliable predictions. ” Is it HER he is trying to reassure, or himself ? The nightmare is far from impossible— all it requires is a misfired curse. an unexpected explosion. a delayed reaction. And he can feel it in his wand-arm; it has grown slow and tired from weeks spend underground. But Remus is confident. As a husband and father, he cannot afford to anticipate the worst case scenario for the sake of the people he would be leaving behind. It is the thought of returning to them that will make him stand tall in duels.
He is unsure what to expect when he arrives at the castle. It will undoubtedly be like nothing that has occurred ever before— more brutal ? more merciless ? Students / children in the middle of a ruthless fight ; a déjà vu pops up at the mere thought. All he knows for certain is that the clock is ticking, and there is no place for fear nor hesitation in his heart.
Eyes take the sight of her in once more ; the iconic hair , the friendly - now worried - face , the clumsy holes in her tights, which almost seem an allusion to the brown patches in his own cloak. Even a blind man would see the solid love with which he gazes at her. He leans forward and presses his lips to her forehead, closed eyes twitching slightly as if it physically aches to let go. He will not die; refuses to. After failing her once, he isn’t planning to do so twice.
“ I’ll be back before you know it. I’m going to make absolutely sure of that. For you and for him. ” The final syllable is pronounced with a hoarse tone while he casts a quick glance at the crib in the corner ( not knowing it will be his last. )
