NGC 5248, C45 // Greg Nelson

NGC 5248 is notable for the ring structure around its central region. These nuclear rings have hot spots of star-formation activity, called starbursts. Because NGC 5248 is so close to Earth (compared to other galaxies with these features), it offers a great chance to study how these starbursts happen and progress.

NGC 5248, C45 // Steve Solon

Much closer than the last entry, NGC 5248 is a spiral galaxy about 69 million light years away in the constellation of Boötes, the Herdsman. Discovered by William Herschel (1738-1822) in 1784, this galaxy is best seen through a telescope in the late spring in the northern hemisphere.
