I’ve been in california for about six months.
I knew it wasn’t going to be easy out here, but I didn’t expect it to be this hard. I guess I should have known. Secretly, I’ve never been good at finding work. I work hard and diligently when I have a job to do, but if I have to seek out work, I fall flat. I get too caught up in doing nothing and agonizing over not having anything to do that I don’t find something to do take up my time.
I expected opportunity to run rampant here. That I would have to just start meeting people and say “hey, I like to do things,” and people would have opportunities for me to join. I didn’t expect to get paid at first, I just expected passion projects. Maybe my biggest obstacle is not meeting new people.
Maybe it’s because we are so far from LA, or that I’m not great at meeting people in general, or that I just don’t know where to look.
But that’s not the point of this post. This post is to remind me of my idea.
Since I haven’t had a paying job and my funds are getting low, I’ve started to panic. But I had a great idea a few nights ago, and I’ve let it sit and grow and I think I have come up with something.
I want to create a short 5 or 6-track EP about living in California. Given I’ve only been here for 6 months and I don’t feel like I’ve had a “real” california experience, but I want to talk about what I’ve been through so far.
I also need to start making money and building a career. I want to use this EP as a way to introduce my friends and family to my music and offer them a way to help fund this dream I am chasing.
I’ve also had the idea that I want to present this short EP as a radio show, with commercials and news updates and the like. Sort of inspired by The Who, a Halsey 8track playlist, and a general need to make everything more complicated than it needs to be.
If you’re paying attention (though I doubt I’ve given quite enough info), this is the third(?) time I’ve changed my ‘first’ album. Originally it was the Mask Project, then Seance, then ü, now this. It’s fine, I’m rolling with the punches, I’m adapting as I go. It’s only a little frustrating because I can’t seem to finish anything before moving on to the next.
Anyway, this project will be under the rüster name because I intend it to be a little brighter, more poppy, and a little more upbeat.
I want to get an instant-print camera and a journal to use as inspiration for the album. Take pictures of things that inspire me around california, write something on them, stick them in the journal. Much like the zines Angelspit uses to create lyrics for their albums. I hope that, when the album is finished and released, I can offer pages as merch, or perhaps the entire journal itself, as something a fan could buy. Of course, that’s in the future.
Now that I’ve announced my plans, I have to start them. I guess it’s time to get to work.
