WELCOME HOME / MARCO & CALLIE --- @calliexjames
Most days were long days at Santiago’s Auto Works, but this was something Marco had learned when he was younger. With his father and his father’s father before him having worked at the shop, it was of no question to Marco the life he would live. When he was younger and life was easier, he spent day after day running around in grease and dirt from all the cars that his father and the other mechanics worked on. Now that he was older, he was still covered in grease and dirt --- only, he wasn’t running around by his father’s feet anymore. This time, he was working on the cars himself.
And yet, this was something Marco had come to love: the long days, the grease, the dirt. It was all a part of the life he knew how to live, the life he knew how to lead. It was one thing to do something out of necessity, and another to do it out of passion. Marco was so lucky that what he did was born from both reasons; others did not so often find what they wanted in life. When things became especially difficult for him, Marco only had to remember this. The passion. The heart. What his father and his father’s father stood for. He only had to remind himself.
Like all people, however --- even those driven with passion ---, Marco had to come home. He had to come home to an empty apartment unit, to a home where he could not rest because the thought of Astrid not being there haunted him. It was a strange feeling to have gone six months without her, and yet stranger to know that he had not gotten over her even a single bit. His apartment was littered with memories of them and how they used to be; Marco much preferred rest in the backseat of a car as opposed to his own bed.
But he had to come home. He had to. Little did he know that something different was coming his way tonight.
His doorknob was the same. His keys were the same. But the inside of his home was not. As he opened the door to his apartment, he there found one of his best friends Callie on his couch. A wide smile appeared on his lips as he closed the door behind him and walked over to her. And, without even so much as a hint of hesitation, he shook his friend awake. “Since when did you get back?” The smile on his lips showed in his tone. “You should’ve told me you were coming over! I would’ve bought your favorite ice cream!”
