In case you missed it, on December 13, 2012 the CALM act became a reality. We are now safe from loud commercials; really there is legislation to protect us from loud commercials. And we can thank Representative Anna Eshoo’s brother-in-law.
According to the highly accurate source, Wikipedia, the bill was the United States Senate companion to proposed legislation in the House of Representatives by Representative Anna Eshoo (D-Calif), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. She wrote the bill after a loud commercial interrupted a family dinner. After asking her brother-in-law to turn down the volume, he allegedly said, "Well, you’re the congresswoman. Why don’t you do something about it?”
Ah the brother-in-law, the butt of countless jokes and movie plots; the hapless soul looking for direction; the guy living on your couch; the inappropriate gift for your ten-year-old son guy; the one who maybe you should be listening to. After all, look at what one brother-in-law, in one state, with one comment accomplished.
So the next time you begin to roll your eyes at something your brother-in-law did or said, stop for a moment and think of the Eshoos eating their family dinner without the interruption of loud commercials. I dare to say you’ll look at your brother-in-law a little differently.
