From bestselling author and beloved New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin comes a deeply resonant, career-spanning collection of articles on race and racism, from the 1960s to the present. He takes on issues that are as relevant today as they were when he wrote about them. Uniting all these pieces are Trillin’s unflinching eye and graceful prose. Jackson, 1964 is an indispensable account of a half-century of race and racism in America, through the lens of a master journalist and writer who was there to bear witness. #newrelease #jackson1964 #calvintrillin #newyorker #civilrights
“According to Amy Evans, the SFA’s hot-tamale specialist, Frank Carlton’s final World Championship, held in 2005, had only one contestant who deviated seriously from the classic Delta hot tamale, and he became the object of some derision.
Calvin Trillin, THE NEW YORKER (2013)
Calvin Trillin visited Greenville in 2013 as part of the Delta Hot Tamale Festival. Not long after he headed back north, “Tamales on the Delta: A Culinary Festival in A World Capital” appeared in The New Yorker. Trillin had great things to say about the festival and his time in Greenville, but he worries over whether or not the tamale might just be the thing to save the Delta—at a price.
One thing is for certain, though: Trillin loves tamales. I think we shared at least three dozen that day at Scott’s. Such a lovely man and boy, does he get kids.
