Don't forget your SUNSCREEN!
The fabulous sun in Florida is hotter than you think, especially if you're from the Northern states. It's so easy to underestimate the heat and the UV rays. Sun poisoning or heat stroke are real issues so remember to:
1. Wear sunscreen at all times when outside!
-- Use an SPF of 30 or higher!
-- Check the expiration date!
-- Make sure that your sunscreen blocks BOTH UVA and UVB rays.
-- Reapply every few hours or when getting out of the water.
-- Don't forget to protect your lips and eyelids too.
-- any sign of burning - cover up or get out of the sun.
2. Drink LOTS of PLAIN WATER!
-- Experts say 8 oz for every 20 minutes in the sun.
-- Drink water even if you don't feel thirsty.
-- Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol.
-- both will dehydrate you so if you have one,
be sure to balance it with at least double the
amount of plain water! (1 bottle of beer means
2 extra bottles of water).
3. Wear a hat and sunglasses.
-- the hat should shade the face AND the neck.
-- Sunglases will protect your eyes from glare.
4. Take periodic breaks from the sun,
-- hopping into the pool or ocean will cool your temperature
but not protect your skin
-- Spend some time in the shade or inside periodically
5. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT
EXHAUSTION AND HEATSTROKE!
--- If you experience any of the following symptoms,
get out of the sun immediately and drink fluids.
If symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately:
- skin that is hot to the touch
- dizziness or disorientation
- dark and/or frequent urination
