SMF Classics Vol XV: Calzaghe - Kessler 11.03.2007
Joe Calzaghe’s defining fight was against Mikkel Kessler in Cardiff Stadium in front of 50,000 fans - among the largest crowds of the 21st century. It was a match up of the top two super-middleweights in the world, unbeaten and in their prime. Calzaghe won a close decision, and of course would finish his career with wins over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr to retire undefeated.
Calzaghe wore black sequined trunks by Londsdale with CALZAGHE in white block lettering along the black waistband. “Joseph” was written in script along the left front leg with a patch on right front.
The side panels hand white fringe along the borders with Lonsdale written within the panel, the bottom of the trunks had Italian flag coloring (Calzaghe’s heritage prior to his family moving to Wales).
The back of his trunks had LONSDALE along the back waistband and a Ring Magazine patch and smaller indecipherable logo on the back left and right legs, respectively.
Calzaghe had black Lonsdale shoes and green and red Lonsdale gloves (not a typical glove brand to see in prize fights).
Kessler sported a red and white set in this narrow loss.
He sported red trunks with a white waistband featuring his website in black writing.
Danish and Union Jack flags were on the bottom of his trunks inside a white border. A Kessler logo (inspiration for Sergey Kovalev’s logo years later, perhaps?) appeared on the front left thigh.
JACK JOHNSON appeared sideways in black along the white stripe down the side of the trunks.
Kessler wore red Everlast gloves and white Adidas shoes with black trim.
Kessler would fight on until 2013, going 7-2 - wining the WBA championship belt twice and scoring a career best win against Carl Froch to win a WBC world title.
Classic looks and a classic fight.
