THE BLOODETTES 2005 or The Bloodiest Cameroon film in French with English subtitles (OVES)
Les Saignantes (French) (The Bloodettes aka The Bloodiest) is a 2005 provocative, genre-blending film from Cameroon, directed by Camaroonian director Jean-Pierre Bekolo and shot in French. Set in a futuristic 2025, it follows two women who use ritual, sensuality, and subversion to navigate and dismantle a corrupt patriarchal system.
The film fuses Afro-futurist aesthetics with political satire, mysticism, and eroticism—challenging conventions while drawing on deep cultural roots like the Mevoungou ritual. The Mevoungou is a sacred, precolonial ritual practiced by the Beti people of Cameroon, traditionally performed by a secret female society to restore balance and life during times of crisis. It involves spiritual cleansing, female solidarity, and the symbolic exclusion of men.
It’s visually daring, narratively experimental, and unapologetically mature.
The film follows two sex workers in a future 2025 as they attempt to dispose of the corpse of a political leader who dies as a client of one of the women. The film also addresses political corruption in Cameroon through its plot and use of intertitles. The film won the Silver Stallion (second best African film) at Fespaco 2007 and the Best Actress awards with the special mention of the jury.
