“Hey, what’s brought this on?” Sirius asked, hugging Reg back anyway.
“The letters. The ones you sent in your first year at school. I never got them. I think Mother kept them from me.”
“What?” Sirius choked out, his voice thick as he tried to swallow. He hugged Reg even harder. “I thought you hated me,” he confessed.
“I thought you hated me!”
“James, care to dance while these two sort themselves out?”
“Thought you’d never ask,” James laughed and gamely took Remus’s proffered hand.
They danced for a while, sharing jokes and commenting on what everyone was wearing before Reg and Sirius came back and separated them again.
“We’re good,” Reg confided in him as they made their way over to the sweet table. James grinned at the two chocolate fountains, one labelled ‘For Guests’ and the other, ‘For Remus Only! Hands Off If You Wish To Keep Them!’ Reg looked around, his eyes darting around the garden, then grabbed a fruit kebab and shoved it under the melted chocolate in Remus’s fountain. He hadn’t even taken it out before a hand wrapped around his wrist and drew it away from the flowing chocolate.
“That is mine,” Remus growled, narrowing his eyes at Reg before plucking the skewer out of Reg’s hand and walking off with the chocolate goodie.
“How on earth did he see that?” Reg asked. “He wasn’t anywhere near us!”
“Remus has a sixth sense when it comes to chocolate,” James laughed and helped himself to one of the furry skewers, making sure to use the guest fountain to cover it in a liberal amount of chocolate.
Effie picked that moment to bring out the huge red velvet cake she’d baked. Remus and Sirius hurried over, Sirius bobbing up and down on the balls of his feet, eager to get a slice of cake. Effie handed him a long knife, and together he and Remus cut into their cake.
They took small pieces each and delicately held them up to each other’s mouths before shoving the red cake with thick, white cream cheese icing into their husband’s face. Everyone burst out laughing as Remus almost devoured Sirius as he licked the smudges of cake from his face. The cake was cut and dished out, Remus getting a noticeably larger slice than anyone else. The garden was quiet for a few minutes, and then the celebrations continued.
The reception went on all day, and as the sun dropped below the horizon and the moon crept up in the sky, the garden was cast in a warm glow from the fairy lights. Together, they spread out blankets and had a picnic of all the leftover food, relaxing as the party calmed down into something more restful.
“Best wedding ever, right?” Peter asked as he set his music to shuffle and joined them for some cold pork sandwiches.
“Amazing. It wouldn’t have been the same without you as DJ, though. Utterly flawless,” Marlene gushed. “I nearly danced my feet off; the music was so perfect.”
“Aww, thanks, Marls,” Peter said, blushing visible even in the low light.
Full to bursting with food, they all lay back on the soft blankets and looked up at the starry sky.
“I hope our wedding’s as good as this one,” Reg whispered. James’s body froze for a beat before he forced it to relax. Was Reg really saying what he thought he was? He thought about their wedding? Did that mean that one day he saw them getting married?
James swallowed and pulled Reg closer as he said, “As long as you’re there, it will be the greatest wedding I will ever go to.”
Reg grinned, tilted his head to kiss James’s jaw and then settled back down to gaze at the sky above until the reception came to an end and the tents got put up for a camp out with Peter, Mary, Lily and Marlene. As he snuggled into the extra-wide sleeping bag with Reg, James couldn’t help but think the day couldn’t have gone any better.
