i think that heated rivalry has exposed me to how outside countries (mainly America) think canada works and it’s so so funny to me i’ve never been more entertained. people saying that shane is a country boy who grew up spending summers in the wilderness and it’s jsut like, the Muskokas. like yeah it’s not the same level of city boyness that ilya has going on, but like he’s not taking on the rockies every august or anything it’s still very much just normal wealthy family cottage country.
or like the amount of ppl saying shane takes off his shoes bc he’s Asian, and like i can’t speak to that cultural experience, but after spending my entire life in canada i’ve only ever been told to keep my shoes on in one persons house and it felt weird the whole time.
or thinking that our university/college sports teams are big in the same way americas are big when theyre just straight up not. unless ur school has a rivalry or ur already really into sports u probably don’t know or hear a lot about it and it DEFINITELY isn’t televised like americas is
and the amount of emphasis i’ve seen placed on our cash in some fics is so funny like at least 80% of people just pay by tap now a days but that technology is still much newer in america.
oh my god one time i read a fic where a waiter in ottawa took shane’s card instead of giving him the reader like its such a small thing but it felt like i was a detective catching someone in the act.
and all the little cultural things and differences between anglo and french canada ik it’s brushed over mostly in the series but it’s interesting how a lot of fics treat all of canada whether it be vancouver or toronto or ottawa or montreal as the same cultural landscape like no actually a toronto accent would be like kind of incredibly rare in BC. idk it’s interesting to see how other people think of us i love to see it
