Legendary Australian Doomers Pod People Plot Sun Burn Takeover
~By Brad Nicholson~
POD PEOPLE play Sun Burn fest in Melbourne, Australia, on November 30th.
Fact: Pod People were the first Australian band to be signed to Rise Above Records.
Fact: Pod People have been playing shows for 27 years.
Fact: Back in the day, Pod People played numerous shows with the likes of Cathedral, Celtic Frost, and Electric Wizard.
After a seven year beak, we caught up with Pod People to chat before their return to the stage next week.
Mons Animae Mortuorum by Pod People
Describe your music for someone who hasn’t seen you before.
We're a Masala of doom, metal, stoner, and rock.
What are you working on right now and if it’s a record how long 'til we get to hear it?
We're working on being able to do justice to a slice of our back catalog for the festival show. We have begun writing and we plan to record and release an album in 2020.
What’s the creative process that brings the best out of your band?
The sticky, icky, extreme volume and an open mind to listen to each other's ideas. Also having a theme to write, too, makes it easier to focus.
Are you or any member of your band a witch, wizard, warlock or any combination of the three?
Maggs is a combination of two of those things, but which two depends on the cycles of the moon and tides.
What’s the best band that you have seen in the last year that people may not have heard of before?
I guess there's the obvious bands that shouldn't be unknown at this point to punters like Potion, Hobo Magic, and Dr. Colossus, who are all into their second or third records and absolutely growing into forces of nature. There are some newer bands emerging like Hekate, Remains, Ploughshare, Lucifungus, Burn The Hostages, Carcinoid, Reaper, and a bunch of others actively playing shows and growing into their own. It feels a bit like music is healthier than ever before, especially in heavier stakes.
Doom Saloon by Pod People
What was your favourite record in 2019?
There were quite a few: Orodruin - Ruins of Eternity, Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus, Holy Serpent - Endless, The Hard Ons - So I Could Have Them Destroyed, Torche - Admission, Thelma & The Sleeze - Fuck Marry Kill, Cerebral Rot - Odious Descent Into Decay, The Neptune Power - Federation Memoirs of a Rat Queen, Gatekreeper - Deserted, Dispossessed - Warpath Never Ended, Witchcliff - Rust, Mental Cavity - Neuro Siege, Lucifungus - Akuma Kin, Dickie Birds - Dickie Birds, Beastwars - IV, Big Business - The Beast You Are, the Evil Eye releases, and I love, love, love the Henry Fiat's Open Sore record Fiat Currency.
What band would you add to the Sun Burn line-up if money was no object?
It will be Black Sabbath always while all four members are still alive. Otherwise, Goatsnake or Elder or The Obsessed. Please. So everyone come this year so the promoters can get enough cash to bring out a rad band.
What is your go-to remedy for sun burn?
Staying indoors and making riffs.
If you could resurrect any deceased musician to join your band who would it be and why?
Who wrote these questions? Um, look I think maybe Armando Acosta from St. Vitus on drums would probably fit in the best. As much as I would like to have Jimi, Phil Lynott or Lemmy come back, they'd not be hugely into Pod People's music. Maybe Jimi Hendrix as a second choice, just so he had a chance to see what his legacy has turned out like and to see what the guitar has evolved into in 2019. He would then likely ask me why I was playing guitar like it was 1975 still.
What does 2020 hold for your band?
We are hoping to play at least twice as many shows as we did in 2019. The plan would be to make a record and try and finish off Dante's Divine Comedy trilogy of ideas that we started on Doom Saloon and Mons Animae Mortuorum.
