Sorry that this took forever and a year to write. Hope you are able to enjoy it regardless!
Parents often dreamed of what their children would make of their lives. The bonds they would form, decisions they would make, and the careers they would choose.
It probably went without saying that most parents didn’t anticipate that their baby would go on to be a paranormal investigator. Or particularly wanted that. Your parents certainly didn’t, if all of the beleaguered sighs and forwarded college open campus invitations were anything to go off of.
But it’s whatever. You’ve long since learned how to take criticisms of your career choice on the chin. From your parents, to random people making small talk with you, to even your own damn clients sometimes, you’ve heard it all.
“Ha! But no, seriously, what do you do for a living?”
“You’re never going to make a living off that!”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea? Maybe just keep it as a side hustle while you work a real job?”
The worst ones, though? Commenters. The blog you ran documenting your findings had amassed a small but dedicated following. Not of fans, but of a bunch of skeptics that loved to rip your work apart and discredit all of it.
And it’s not as if you were struggling to find anything substantial to show them. No, quite the opposite! You couldn’t walk five feet without having a near death experience against some creature of the night! Despite the fact that you never had any encounters before getting into this profession, it would seem that these kinds of things were extremely easy to find the second you went looking for them.
Ghosts can be found basically everywhere. Sure, there are particular hotspots for them, but a lost soul can get tied to anything. From their place of death or familiar home, to the spirit’s favorite convenience store or a place they just thought would be funny to haunt because even the deceased have a sense of humor, apparently.
Exorcising the ghost haunting a Chuck E. Cheese was certainly one of your more memorable experiences, even if it did get you accused of trying to cash in on Five Nights at Freddy’s popularity. Though you could have gone without the weird rash you got after being pelted with disturbingly wet balls from the ballpit, admittedly.
Then there was that merfolk creature you found in a swamp in the middle of nowhere. Mean motherfucker. Hissed and snarled at you like a wild animal and kept trying to bite and drown you. Your grasp on the camera was understandably shaky due to you fighting for your life, but the comment section did not see it that way. No. According to them, it was shaky to hide the “terrible costume” your “friend” was wearing.
The ancient demon hurling curses at you over a botched summon was clearly fake because it was speaking “gibberish” instead of Latin like the commenters thought it should. How dare demons have their own languages, you guess.
Can’t forget the time you were getting chased down by a furious shapeshifter, and its constantly shifting body parts were deemed to be the “obvious” work of AI. That situation went on to create a demand for you to apologize for using such a thing instead of hiring real people to animate it, but you’ve been holding the line by insisting that everything is authentic whether they believe you or not.
Everyone’s a damn critic, and you’re their insane court jester that keeps doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.
Listening to people who didn’t have a horse in the race would only get you so far. Was there some truth to their words? Of course. You would have to be delusional to say otherwise. This was a far from stable job, and you were admittedly struggling to get by. You lived in a run down RV that was begging for death, paying jobs were sparse at the best of times (and ad revenue even worse), and the amount of credit card debt you were in would make you sick if you thought about it too hard.
So why did you keep doing this? It’s simple. Because you loved it. You loved your job and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Ever since you can remember, you’ve had a fascination for the supernatural. Mythology, urban legends, superstitions, ghost sightings, cryptids, you couldn’t get enough! You always wanted- needed more.
Naturally, this led to you choosing to pursue this interest of yours professionally. Most of your income came from people believing their property was haunted, or occasionally some people hired you to accompany them into an area known for supernatural sightings as a guide of sorts. Some of these cases were legit, but most weren’t. It would seem that your talent for finding actual monsters only activated when there were no other witnesses around.
Part of you thought you may be damned to being little more than some wannabe ghostbuster or scorned YouTuber for the rest of your life, but then you finally got a break. Or, to be more accurate, found a lead.
When you were stranded in an RV park because your camper was seemingly in a permanent state of being overheated, a stroke of luck came your way. One of the other people at the campground had a camper of a similar make and model- though his was in considerably better shape than yours- and he offered to try and get it going for you.
While your interest for the supernatural was widespread, there was one thing in particular that you’d always been especially interested in. Vampires. Maybe it was all of the fiction surrounding them that brought them to the forefront of your attention, but their ancient history really sealed the deal. They went back so far and appeared so consistently through so many cultures, so if everything else was proving itself to be real, then there was no reason for them not to be too. That’s what you told yourself, at least. You’d never actually seen one.
Until now.
When that man, Ace, had helped you, you couldn’t help but notice a few oddities about him. Despite him having been at that campground all day, he didn’t emerge from his RV until nightfall. The RV was its own clue. All of the windows were covered with cardboard and curtains, and while you can understand doing something like that for the bedroom for sleeping purposes, this practice extended throughout the entire camper. Even the windshield had been covered when you got there in the morning.
His skin was ice cold when you shook his hand despite it being a humid summer’s day. Sure some people’s hands are always cold due to poor circulation, but it was odd that he wasn’t even a little sweaty despite the heat.
And of course, you couldn’t miss the elongated canines when he grinned at you.
It was so incredibly kind of him to get your shitbox camper back in order, and for free, too. So, how have you gone on to repay him?
Well, by stalking him, of course! When you’re this close to a major breakthrough, you can’t just throw it to the wind because of decorum! You’re sure he’d understand… but just to be safe, you are trying to evade detection.
Just because he’s been nice so far, doesn’t mean that he won’t snap and try to drain you of your blood if you piss him off enough. You may be fanatical, but you aren’t delusional. You understand that you’re dealing with extremely dangerous creatures.
It’s been almost a month since you started tailing Ace. In the beginning, you were more than a little conflicted over whether or not this was a good idea. Not because of the risk, but because you weren’t entirely sure he even was a vampire. You’ve yet to see any impressive displays of strength or supernatural powers.
Obviously, you haven’t seen him drink any blood.
Granted, you haven’t seen him consume anything else either, but that could be explained away. Maybe he just had a very restrictive diet or allergies? You’ve also never seen him in sunlight, but maybe he has lupus and can’t be in sunlight without risking his health? What little you had was all easily debunkable.
It was hard to say if he was simply really good at hiding what he was… or if you were just some batshit insane person stalking a man off a hunch.
If you’re being honest with yourself, it’s starting to feel like the latter.
Perhaps it’s about time you moved on to other investigations?
“What a waste of time…”
Rain pours down all around you as you fight against the wind to get back to where you parked. Of course this was the kind of weather that you needed to make a grocery run in. Just your luck, as of late.
Doing this after nightfall was far from ideal, but so was driving on an empty stomach and without a reliable energy drink stash to sip from. Everything seems to be fine, at least. You haven’t seen Ace since yesterday, so even if he is a vampire, he’s most likely already left this city. There’s nothing to worry about.
It’s at this precise moment that a scream cuts through the air.
Every muscle in your body tenses. The scream was short and ended very abruptly, but you know for a fact that you heard it. You turn your head in the direction it came from. It sounded like whoever screamed was just behind the closed down gas station about a block back.
The reasonable thing to do would be to keep walking. This isn’t your problem. It’s probably nothing. Someone could have dropped their phone in a puddle and yelled out of frustration… but they sounded terrified.
This isn’t something you need to bother yourself with… but you’ve never been very good at minding your own business, now have you?
After setting your bags of groceries down under an awning to keep them somewhat dry, you slowly make your way over to the gas station. Fortunately for you, the downpour of rain was easily masking any noise your approach could be making.
Out of instinct, you reach into your jacket pocket and retrieve your small camcorder, then turn it on. You have no idea what you’re walking into, but already being recording would be helpful regardless of whether or not this was a monster attack or human on human crime.
As you get closer, you start to hear… something? It was this wet, slurping sound. Like someone was desperate for water, but trying to drink from a less than ideal source. Was somebody drinking rainwater off the ground or something? Gross…
Once you’re just around the corner from whatever may be lurking behind this gas station, you take a second to steel yourself, then carefully peek around the wall with your camera.
Two people were on the ground, one crouched over the other. Blood was pouring out of the neck of the man lying flat on the ground. The blood was spilling from where the other man was biting into him.
A gasp escapes you before you can even realize what you are doing. The man’s head snaps up immediately, teeth still sunk into the other’s neck, and his dark eyes lock onto yours. No… No way… You know him.
“Ace?” The words are little more than a hoarse whisper as you stagger back.
Hearing his own name makes him release his prey, the man’s corpse falling back onto the wet pavement, dyeing the rainwater even more red. Ace stands up and frantically wipes at his blood soaked face, “This isn’t what it looks like! I can explain!”
You don’t wait to hear the explanation. You already know exactly what’s going on. Your instincts were dead on. Ace is a vampire, and now you’re alone with him.
When he takes a step toward you, your survival instincts finally kick back in. You spin on your heel and sprint as fast as you can. Your life quite literally depends on it.
Behind you, you can hear Ace yelling your name. Shit! He remembers you, too! This keeps getting worse!
Much like how the rain muffled your approach before, it was masking his pursuit now. There was no way of knowing just how close he was behind you, and didn’t have the nerves to look over your shoulder and see for yourself. Instead, you focused on running to safety. If you could just make it inside your camper, he shouldn’t be able to follow you inside without an invitation, right? God, you hope that legend turns out to be true!
There’s a flash of movement from the corner of your eye, and that’s all the warning you got before being tackled to the ground. Your camcorder flies out of your hands and skids away from you. Ace tries to grab for your wrists, but your years of fighting off monsters have given you good reflexes.Your foot connects with his chest and successfully knocks him off balance.
You crawl forward, trying to grab the camera and get to your feet at the same time. Just as your fingers graze it, a hand latches onto your ankle and yanks you back, making you faceplant into the puddle beneath you. You sputter and cough as you try to recover and spit out the filthy water, but that gave Ace the perfect opening to apprehend you.
Arms lock around you, pinning your own to your midsection as he effortlessly hauls you up into the air. You struggle against his hold and kick wildly with your legs, but you have no way of getting any leverage against him in this position.
“You’re making this way harder than it needs to be!” Ace grunts with effort as he starts to walk, carrying you toward some unknown destination. His voice tinges with anger as he continues to speak, “I just wanted to do something nice for someone, and now look what you’re making me do!”
“I’m not making you do anything! Let me go, dammit!”
“All that you had to do was keep on steppin’, but no! You just had to follow me, and then you got that on video!” Ace stops by where your fallen camcorder, then raises one foot and stomps on it over and over again until it’s an unidentifiable lump of plastic, then kicks it down a gutter on the side of the road.
“This is just great, I’m never going to hear the end of this if I can’t cover this up.” Ace has now switched to agitated mumbling.
“Cover what up, Ace?”
Both you and Ace freeze at the intrusion of a new voice. You look up to locate the source of it and spot a man crouched up on the roof of a nearby building. His chin was propped up on one hand as he regarded both of you through the lenses of his glasses.
A hand clamps over your mouth, and the arm still around your midsection tightens more, making it harder to breathe. “What? Me? Cover something up? I would never, Marco! You must’ve misheard me!”
The man, Marco, stands up, then drops down from the roof. It’s a five story building, but he sticks the lands flawlessly, entirely unphased by what should have been a fatal fall. No, not another one! Your fighting spirit renews itself, and you try to break Ace’s ironclad hold on you, but it’s useless. You can barely even breathe right now, much less overpower a vampire.
Marco comes to a halt in front of you, giving you a clear view of the fangs just barely peeking out from behind his lips. “Who’s your friend here? They seem quite scared…”
Ace turns to move you away from Marco, “Oh, um… I don’t know them. I just… saved them from being attacked is all. That’s why they’re so on edge.”
“Saved them, huh? Is that why they were running from you and fighting you? What a strange reaction to being saved.” Ace stiffens at the reveal of how much Marco had already seen. “And, Ace, that lie isn’t very believable when you’re still wearing your last meal.”
There’s a very heavy pause between them. Your head is starting to spin, though you’re not sure how much of it is a result of oxygen deprivation or stress.
Ace’s tone drops down to a pleading murmur. “Don’t do this… I’ll set things straight with them, make sure they won’t say anything about what they saw.”
“You know that isn’t how this works.”
That’s the last thing you hear before you lose consciousness.
—
There’s no way of knowing how much time has passed by the time you start to regain your senses. The first thing that strikes you is the burning sensation coursing through your entire body. It feels like you just ran a marathon with zero training, and then got set on fire as a reward. Oh god, you think you’re going to throw up!
You jerk into a sitting position, then proceed to immediately vomit from the sudden motion. You’re so disoriented that you don’t even realize you aren’t alone until you feel someone patting your back. From there, you can take note of the bucket pressed against your chest that you’re presently emptying your guts into.
“There, there. This is completely normal. Your body needs to purge out all of the food in it before it can make you more ill.”
That voice…
After a few more retches, you’re finally able to properly open your eyes and attempt to take in your surroundings. It’s a very brief attempt, however. Despite the room being dark, your eyes were so sensitive that a passing street light hit you like a flashbang.
A pathetic whimper is all that you can produce as you cower back, body heavy and shaking with exertion. It felt like every inch of you was coated in a sheen of sweat. What the fuck is happening? Something is wrong. Something is horribly wrong.
“I wish I could say that this will be all over soon, but these symptoms don’t begin to wane until about a week, give or take.” It’s the same voice as before. Marco.
Without prompting, he carries on, “I’m sure you have lots of questions. Where to start…”
“W-Where am I?” You couldn’t glean much with your eyes, but your other senses are picking up the slack. Your ears note the rumbling of an engine, and you can feel the bumps and sways you’ve long since learned to associate with being in a vehicle.
“I suppose that’s as good a place as any to start.” You register the sound of Marco standing up and approaching you. “We’re in Ace’s carriage of sorts.”
Ace called back from the front of the RV, “It’s a Winnebago. I’ve told you this a million times, get it straight already, man…”
Marco lets out a noncommittal hum and places something onto your face, settling it on the bridge of your nose. Glasses? Why would he give you that of all things right now?
Your head throbbed from all the noise, making you double over and curl in on yourself. “What’s happening to me?”
“From what I’ve seen, I get the feeling you can figure that out yourself.” A new voice chimes in on the discussion, prompting you to open your eyes again. “After all, you seem to be quite well-versed in all things supernatural.
It takes a few blinks for your vision to clear enough to be usable. The trace amounts of light are no longer assaulting your delicate eyes now that everything has been dimmed. It would seem that what Marco had given you were sunglasses.
As you blearily look around the small bedroom you’re crammed into, you see two people in here with you. Marco is standing by the bedside and watching you closely. On the other side, what appears to be a… geisha(?) is sitting on the bed and flipping through a book. Wait… That isn’t just any book, it’s one of your personal notebooks you jotted down your discoveries into!
The geisha looks up from your book and smiles at you, revealing an all too familiar pair of fangs. “Come, now. Guess. What do you think is happening to you?” The voice is masculine, matching the one you had heard before.
Given the context clues, the answer is as obvious as it is unpleasant. You don’t want to believe it. The idea of that being true makes you feel sick. Anything would be better than that.
Shakily, you bring up one hand and run it around your neck only to find exactly what you feared most. Two, tiny puncture wounds along one of your jugulars. From there, your fingers trail over to your mouth and feel along your teeth until they find a sharp point.
“No… You didn’t…” Your voice cracks and peeters off.
Marco sits next to you and rests one hand on your back, “We really didn’t want to, especially not Ace, but you didn’t leave us much choice. You saw too much, and we needed a way to guarantee that you wouldn’t go reporting your findings to any hunters.”
“I wouldn’t have said anything! You didn’t even give me a chance!”
“Perhaps you would have kept your silence, but those monster hunters have some rather… unscrupulous methods of getting information out of people once they have their suspicions about them. I understand that it may not feel that way presently, but this was for your own good.”
“My own good?!” Your head snaps up, and you’re just angry enough to be able to muscle through the way the action makes your head spin. “You think that transforming me into one of you against my will was for my own good?!”
If your outburst bothered Marco at all, he didn’t let it show. He simply smiled and settled his hand on your shoulder to force you to lay back down again. “I’m aware this isn’t ideal, but rest assured, we do take responsibility for those we turn. You’ll have no absence of support and resources during this new chapter of your life.”
The geisha discarded the notebook he was reading and picked up another, “Pops will be excited to have a new member of the family again. The last addition was Ace, but hopefully you will be a touch more cooperative than he was.”
“As soon as we get home, he can assist in making your transformation more smooth and comfortable. His venom is far more potent than mine.” Marco says this as if to soothe you. It doesn’t.
If you couldn’t even escape one vampire, how were you ever supposed to get away from an entire “family” of them?
