While it’s been a theory for a long time that Knights represent what a session is absent of, that may not be completely accurate. For Dave’s session, yes, but he was very efficient at buying time through his hops, and even Vriska admitted that Karkat was successful at uniting his team... until all Hope was crushed. Kurloz came from a version of Alternia that was not as indulgently violent, and they blamed the failure of their session on that difference. As of postcanon, especially, it is fair to say that everyone from the B2 session, save for the Void player in Meat, seems to have been reduced to skin-deep parodies of their original personalities.
Knights may not represent what a session lacks, given that Knights take it upon themselves to provide their Aspect. Which, they have all been keenly proficient at their Aspect, whether or not their strength is in combat. Princes may better represent what a session is missing, and Knights may be the force it must weigh against.
Decision against passivity. Cooperation against hopelessness. Continuity against heteronomy.
