Sima Yi, Cao Zhen, and the fly between them
The Advisors Alliance
↳ This is a very serious political drama.
Since you and Daolunofshiji sometimes mention him, I might as well ask... Who was Chen Tai? From what I get he might as well be the real God of War of the Three Kingdoms because you both seen to love him, and praise him! On that same matter, who was Cao Zhen? Was he related to Cao Cao's family?
I don’t want to oversell Chen Tai. He was a very good commander, but not top-tier like Lü Meng or Deng Ai.
You can read his SGZ here.
To summarize he was the son of Chen Qun, and his mother was Xun Yu’s daughter. He was regarded as brilliant even from his youth, and early in his career he distinguished himself through his good conduct.
In 249, Chen Tai was sent west as Inspector of Yong, to replace Guo Huai (who had been promoted out of the position). For the next several years he, Guo Huai, and Deng Ai fended off Jiang Wei’s invasions skillfully.
Chen Tai’s biggest moment came in 255. Guo Huai had passed away and everyone’s attention was focused on Guanqiu Jian’s rebellion in the east. Jiang Wei invaded and Yong’s new inspector Wang Jing ignored Chen Tai’s orders and met him in the field. Wang Jing was defeated and retreated back to Didao, where Jiang Wei besieged him. Despite these setbacks, Chen Tai managed to completely reverse the situation, outmaneuver Jiang Wei, and force his retreat; all while making it look easy.
After that, Chen Tai was recalled to the capital to serve as a special adviser. He was a key figure in Sima Zhao’s government, and he participated in the campaign against Zhuge Dan. Chen Tai passed away in 260.
Cao Zhen was a distant kinsman of Cao Cao’s family - the exact relationship is unclear. His father was one of Cao Cao’s close friends, and Cao Cao raised Cao Zhen along with Cao Pi and Cao Xiu. They shared the same living quarters. When Cao Zhen was older, he and Cao Xiu served in Cao Chun’s elite cavalry. After this division was disbanded in 210, Cao Zhen held miscellaneous posts under Cao Cao. He was influential during operations in Hanzhong in 219.
Cao Zhen became one of Wei’s top commanders under Cao Pi and was responsible for 1/3 of the Great River Campaign. He later replaced Xiahou Mao as the commander over the west. He fended off the first three of Zhuge Liang’s invasions, although his own plan to invade Shu was thwarted by the weather.
He was Grand General when he died in 231 and was replaced by Sima Yi. Cao Zhen was a highly accomplished general, and he was much loved by his soldiers because he did menial labor with them.
Shin Sangoku Musou Blast: Zhao E, Wang Lang, Cao Zhen, Cao Xiu, Cao Shuang, He Yan
"Cao Shuang learnt to fear the name Sima Yi from a tender age. Not because of the political tensions between their clans, he was too young to understand such things in those days.
No, he feared Sima Yi because it was the name that always burst from his father's lips when he came home in a fit of rage, looking for anything, anyone to vent his anger onto. Someone like his eldest son, who preferred the delicate fragrances of growing things to the scent of iron - who preferred to read the works of Cai Yan than of Sun Tzu.
And as Zhaobo grew older the fear festered inside him until it became a deep-seated hatred. Hatred for the man that made his father hate him. Hatred for the man who had taken his father from him."
