“I shall miss you, Havers.”
That ten seconds of cap with his jacket off is a highlight for me already
Can we talk about this wonderful scene in S3E5 of 'Ghosts', please? SPOILERS FOR SERIES THREE!
Because it's such a poignant scene that shows how supportive Alison and the ghosts are towards the Captain and his sexuality.
Alison mentions that talking about things is a good way of learning to accept things, and she is supporting Kitty and the rest of the ghosts in accepting parts of themselves that they haven't really spoken about before.
And this scene shows that Alison is aware of the Captain's sexuality, but has never pried before because she respects his boundaries.
The Captain's face when she asks him if there is anything he'd like to share is so important.
Alison's expression as she tries to silently encourage him that it's okay to talk to her about it makes my heart happy. She's so supportive in her smile.
And you can tell in Cap's expression and response that he appreciates that. He looks around the room and sees his friends all giving him the same supportive looks, and he wants to say but he finds himself unable to.
He's afraid.
Let's break down each of the ghosts' facial expressions towards Alison prying at the Captain.
Fanny has the same expression as she did with Alison asking Kitty. She knows. She's closest to the Captain out of all the ghosts, so she must suspect that he's not entirely heterosexual. She spends the most time with him. But her expression reads as though she knows it's a very personal subject to the Captain, and she's afraid of his reaction.
She cares about him and she doesn't want him to get upset, or feel pressured.
Robin, as always looks confused. But his attention is still solely on the Captain. He's just watching and listening with contentment.
Pat, though is an interesting one. Pat is usually the ghost that would be asking about these sorts of things, but he knows not to cross boundaries and he completely respects the Captain's (or 'Cap', as he affectionately calls him) boundaries. He knows Cap is uncomfortable and you can see he wants to intervene and say something to change the subject but he ... doesn't. Because he wants him to say it.
And after Cap dismisses the opportunity, you can see how disappointed he is that he didn't take it.
But there's something more there. He's smiling. He's still so supportive of Cap. He always is. But I think he's also smiling because he wants to be the one that speaks to the Captain about it. He is low-key pleased that Alison didn't succeed.
And then there's Julian, who was - like Robin - listening in a content manner. He doesn't make any quick quips, as he normally would, but instead stays silent.
It isn't until the Captain passes over to Thomas that he rolls his eyes, because he's fed up of hearing his dramatics.
But all of the ghosts were so supportive of the Captain and I love it.
Hopefully, one day, he will feel more confident and be able to talk about it. I know he was about to before he was interrupted, but I do really hope that he finds himself able to admit it.
And I hope this leads to a further admission from Pat that he's hopelessly in love with Cap.
so. cap’s medals are on backwards. (they should be on the right side, but they are on the left.)
now, you would assume this is just an error, but it’s been confirmed that this was on purpose.
and like. i’m just thinking of the reasons that might be?
there’s two main theories I really like:
the first is that he put it on in the mirror while dying. This would explain why he appears in a mirror in the intro, and why it would be backwards (dying, mind scrambled and failing, just trying to put the medals on, he puts them on the wrong side)
or, the more likely and kind of sadder one: they arent his.
and-
oh my god guys. They arent his.
I just realized. Everything would make sense then. The backwards medals, the way that he had no idea how tents work, the weird looking out the window as if the germans would already be there in the flashback? his general and clear lack of skill and his obession with all of it? I mean, it’s probable that. He didn’t do much war at all. That all he really did was stay at button house. I mean, we see that button house does’t really do much in the war at least during the time of the flashback ( which is why Havers left.)
So like. maybe he didn’t really do much war at all. Maybe he never went out into the field. Maybe it’s all just this sort of. Front that he puts up.
