I was tagged by morgaine-le-faye! And I’m feeling thoughtful and introspective and I have homework that needs doing so of course I did this instead.
Rule #1: Always post the rules. Rule #2: Answer the questions the person who tagged you wrote, then write 11 new ones Rule #3: Tag 11 people to answer your questions. Tag them and the person who tagged you so they all know what’s going down.
1. What is your favourite smell?
I’ve always maintained that my favourite smell is that of hot asphalt after it rains. That sweet, sharp metallic tang reminds me of summer and being barefoot and the combination of urban and natural worlds. There’s often a similar smell in the air before a lightning storm, all electricity and tension, but I prefer the asphalt I think.
2. How do you deal with conflict?
Conflict has always been a difficult beast for me. I was raised in a very passive aggressive household where the only solution I knew was to run away or tell white lies until all the anger and desire for conflict had abated. These techniques did not serve me well during my childhood, as I found friends came and went quite frequently. Finally, in high school, I met someone who was not only brave enough to call me out on my bullshit, but they stuck around long enough to see me begin to change. These days I’m a little better: I get nervous, I try to bottle it up, then I usually take a deep breath and just let my feelings go. This has mixed results, particularly when done via text message. Conflict and I are still figuring things out.
3. Which of your physical features is your favourite?
Eurgh. This is tough. My hair maybe? It’s gotten super long recently and I love the asymmetrical balance provided by my undercut, which I’ve had for four years now. I started dip dyeing the ends blue and purple, which gets a lot of attention, and I like that. I went through a lot of awkward haircuts in highschool so its nice to feel comfortable with it these days.
4. Which of your non-physical features is your favourite?
My empathy. I want the people I care about to be happy, and I want to surround myself with their happiness so that I can feel happy too. When I’m with someone and we’ve just made each other laugh it just feels amazing. I’ve always liked this about myself, that I’d rather share happiness with others.
5. What is your dream tattoo? If you’re not a tattoo person, what tattoo would you get if you were forced into it at gunpoint?
Oh man, I really like tattoos. I’ve got an appointment for my first one, and while it isn’t my number one dream tattoo, it’s certainly one of them. I would like to cover my body in Alice in Wonderland tattoos. That book means so much to me on so many levels. Those are my dream tattoos. Also an anklet of skulls, where each skull is designed by an artist or person I admire, Neil Gaiman being top of that list of people. I could go on forever about tattoos, so I’ll stop with those two.
6. What would your patronus be?
I find this a really difficult question to answer, because a patronus is supposed to be a reflection of the soul, but a lot of people end up just picking their favourite animal. I don’t know if there’s an animal out there that I could choose honestly as a reflection of my soul, that wouldn’t just be a narcissistic or joke kind of choice. Blue whale maybe? That would be a very large patronus. Miniature Blue whale?
7. What do you do to calm yourself down?
I have a hard time with this these days. In the spring or summer, I run sometimes. Or I go for long biking adventures by myself that usually end up involving comic books and tea. I get out there, I go somewhere by myself and I remind myself that I am an individual capable of endless choice, that I can go places and do things without the support or approval of others. These days however, I find myself reaching out to friends more, using them as support beams as I spend this insane year frittering away my savings and figuring out things about myself. In so many ways while I’m here in Scotland I am alone, and I am always on that metaphorical bike, so I’m aware of my independence. What calms me down is reminding myself that I can reach out and still touch those people who love me, that they’re not gone even if they aren’t physically present.
...I also just make tea, eat chocolate and watch Netflix, like every other early twenties stereotype.
8. How many times (if any) have you been in romantic love?
I’m going to say never on this one. I’m still figuring love out. Call me a late bloomer or whatever, but I was never very in touch with my emotions or feelings as a young one. It’s only recently that things have happened where I really have to take a long hard look at how I feel. I think I was almost in love once, but it may have just been me being in love with the idea of love.
Romantic love aside, I have been in platonic love with so many people. I fall hard for friends.
9. What type of physical pain do you find hardest to bear?
Any sort of intestinal pain I tend to have a hard time dealing with, but who doesn’t? I deal with most physical pain pretty well, so maybe dizziness? I’ve had some tough times with that recently.
10. What is your proudest accomplishment?
Maybe making and self-publishing a microfiction collection featuring my writing and almost twenty artists illustrating? That was not an easy feat, and I’m still proud of the result. I don’t know how much in life I’ve accomplished versus how much I’ve experienced. This could just be me arguing semantics here.
11. What is your favourite type of alcohol? If you don’t drink, what is your favourite type of beverage?
It’s hard to avoid drinking in Scotland! I love Pimms honestly it’s the absolute best, especially when prepared well. These days I’m a spiced rum and coke gal, or I love Heather Ale. I like good quality stuff, which is a pain as I am a poor student who is about to get a very expensive tattoo.
1. Which author would you eat dinner with and what would you eat?
2. What is your preferred apocalypse?
3. If you had absolute power for one minute and could choose to end one social injustice what would it be?
4. If it had the chance to be made, would you choose to make a graphic novel, webcomic, movie, video game or novel? What genre?
5. What is one thing you would go back in time and tell your parents before they raised you?
6.If you could own one piece of clothing, real or imaginary (but not magic) what would it be?
7. Which superhero would you pick to be your sidekick and why?
8. What is one moment that still makes you grind your teeth/embarrassed when you think about it?
9. What is your name?
10. What is your favourite colour?
11. What is the average flight speed of an unladen swallow?
Tagging wardenofthenorth, astroize, lilyvonk, chainsawsavvy, altitudeviolations, natalieshepardvakarian, finallyfrontiered, cobblestone-path, caseyballvins, amphitheus, xpennylane
That was pretty fun, I really should write more, I always forget how nice it is to let things out.
