Laura Hollis/Carmilla Karnstein Chapter 6/7: Chocolate with Vanilla Icing and Mint Sprinkles (Christmas) Rating: T, Total Word Count: 5310 (WIP) Chapter Tags: Christmas, Baking
Carmilla sat at the kitchen table, sipping her coffee as she waited for the oven to ping. She let her thoughts wander, and unsurprisingly they wandered to last year’s Christmas. A lot had changed in only one year.
Last year, she’d come here feeling like an intruder. She’d barely known Laura, and hadn’t known Sherman at all. And they hadn’t known her, but made a place for her where she fitted more comfortably than she’d imagined she could. In that place she’d fallen for Laura, hard and fast. It had made her cautious the first week she’d been here. She hadn’t wanted to make Laura feel uncomfortable and regret inviting her, and she definitely hadn’t wanted Sherman to think she might be a danger to his daughter. The man was a force to be reckoned with.
She smiled into her mug when she remembered the last minute gifts Laura had managed to find for her: a Tardis mug, twin to Laura’s own so Carmilla would stop stealing it; a collection of 17th century poems, a lot of which were overrated in Carmilla’s opinion, but she’d been touched by how well Laura seemed to know her; and somehow Laura had found a book with tips on how to keep your dorm clean. Sherman had looked confused by that one, but Carmilla had chuckled and promised she’d read it, even if she couldn’t promise actually using it.
The oven pinged and Carmilla was startled out of her reverie. She put her coffee down and quickly grabbed the oven mitts to get the cupcakes out. She set them on the counter and looked them over. They didn’t look too bad for a first attempt. Some of them were a little lopsided, and one had spilled over the edge of its cup, but they weren’t burned.
Carmilla and Laura's first anniversary? Pretty please?

It’s All for You
Laura stretches, groaning, then sighing when something inher back pops and settles in the right place. She checks her phone and grins. Beingable to sleep in is such a rarity these days, even on the weekends, thatgetting two extra hours feels amazing. Now that she’s awake, though, she’ll onlyhave a couple minutes before her bladder will force her to get up. She’s going to take full advantage ofthem. Rolling into Carmilla’s spot, she buries her face in the pillow. Her girlfriend smells so good; she’sstopped wondering why Carmilla kept stealing that yellow pillow, a while ago.
When the bladder issue becomes too pressing, she groansand kicks the covers off. After a quick visit to the bathroom, she looks aroundtheir room. She’s up now, and what to do? Shecould clean. The room isn’t muchbigger than the one they’dshared that first, apocalyptic year at Silas, and it wouldn’t take very long. Or she could starton that paper for Medieval English Lit, or those three chapters she has to readfor Photo Journalism before Tuesday. But on her Friday off, free from classesand work, and an entire weekend still before her, her assignments don’t feel very urgent.
What else is there? She sits down on the bed and grabsher phone. She doesn’tunlock it, just stares at the picture of a reading Carmilla she has as her lockscreen, and the date and time written across Carm’sforehead: October 15th. The date sounds familiar, important, butnothing comes to mind. She throws the phone on the bed, and drops next to it.As her head hits the pillow, a memory hits her: Carmilla’s grimy and tear-streaked face leaning over her.
They hadn’twanted their anniversary to be on the date of Laura’s death and the narrow avoidance of the world beingoverrun by hell spawn, so they’ddecided on the day after, October 15th. Which is today.
‘Oh no,’ Laura whispers. ‘Shit! Shit! Oh god!’ She jumps up and throws on the firstset of clothes she finds. Grabbing her bag and keys, she races out the door. ‘I’m theworst girlfriend ever!’

Part 9 of my 13 Days of Halloween series
Because of a snowstorm, Laura is stuck. She finds shelter at an inn where everyone seems a little out of place, the woman who runs the place and the girl she plays chess with in the evening. Except, according to Miss Belmonde, Laura is the only guest at the moment. So who is the girl?
‘Mmpho?’ Laura pulls her scarf away from her mouth. ‘Hello?’ ‘Close the door, darling. You’re letting the cold in.’ A woman appears from the office behind the front desk. ‘Sorry,’ Laura says, and pushes the door closed behind her. ‘I was wondering what a room would cost.’ ‘That would depend on how long you’re staying,’ the woman says. She looks elegant, almost stately, with shiny black hair and clothes that probably cost more than Laura’s tuition. Her voice is silky, seductive, but not like she’s trying to seduce you. No, she’s doing it because she knows the effect she has and thinks it’s fun. Not at all what Laura expected from a small inn high in the mountains.
