Today in 1891, The Music Hall in New York City (now known as Carnegie Hall) has its grand opening and first public performance, with Pyotr Tchaikovsky as the guest conductor.

This striking colour portrait captures Judy Garland on April 23, 1961, the night she delivered a 27-song tour de force that won five Grammy Awards and spent 73 weeks on the Billboard charts. For the second half of the show, she wore a heavily hand-stitched, glittering jacket made of sequins, rhinestones, and bugle beads.

Judy considered it her ultimate good-luck charm. Following her passing, the jacket vanished into private collections for decades. Recently, thanks to a massive crowdfunding effort by over 700 donors, Carnegie Hall officially acquired the jacket. Now fully restored by the craftspeople at F.I.T., it has been returned to the venue for a permanent place of honour in the Rose Museum

Sure, there are multiple answers to “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” There’s public transportation and “practice, practice, practice.” But at his sold-out show at the famed venue on Thursday night, all it took for Geese frontman (and Brooklyn native) Cameron Winter was to put out a knockout debut solo album, Heavy Metal.

They were about to tear down Penn Station, and they threatened to do the same to Carnegie Hall. The Committee to Save Carnegie Hall staged protests outside the famed concert hall, including this one on June 27, 1955. Costumed ballet students carrying posters danced on the sidewalk outside the threatened building to dramatize a public campaign to raise $4,000,000 to save it.
