Yeast by Sweet Beast 2019
Yeast by Sweet Beast Fest is the longest-running 3-night experimental music festival in North America. 2019 marks the 19th year that thereminist, drummer & guitarist Anne Heller has organized and self-funded this three-night DIY festival of experimental, avant-garde and outsider music which has featured acts from all over the United States, Canada, France, Puerto Rico and Argentina. Yeast by Sweet Beast Fest 2017 featured TED Talk speaker and Baltimore musician John Berndt, saxophone-laden experimental rockers Weird Omen from France, jazz-punk mavens Jazzus Lizard, haunting Argentinian ambient songstress Ana Barajas and venerable triple-decade Austin power space rockers ST-37.
“My goal in life (and with Yeast by Sweet Beast Fest) is to make it so everyone can musically turn up the weird so that fewer people feel like they have to shoot people in public places,” says festival creator and curator Anne Heller.
The beautiful and hospitable Sidewinder hosted this 3-night, 2-stage smorgasbord of strange musical delights in 2017. Sidewinder, Carousel Lounge & Nomad Bar hosted the fest in 2018.
Historic Carousel Lounge and equally-historic Elysium are the host venues for 2019. Yeast by Sweet Beast Fest has for 19 years always taken place during the first weekend of SXSW, the Film and Interactive weekend, so that international filmmakers and gamers might find new sources and inspirations for music for their projects and so that musicians who play the fest will not violate their SXSW performance agreements if they end up playing both fests. Yeast by Sweet Beast Fest harmoniously co-exists with SXSW. Admission is an inexpensive $5 per evening, so that (in true DIY fashion) everyone who loves music can afford to attend.
