Happy, are you? With how it turned out. You'll take that boy and you'll eat him up. It doesn't matter if you do it today in this sodden ruin you've created, or you wait 40 years until he's old and quaking and calls it a blessing to have your servants crawling from behind his eyes to seek new light. You'll take all that was good and all that was rotten and every ounce of potential in him, and you'll eat every part of him. And you'll keep on whispering to him that he's right on the verge of realizing something, gaining something real and true, and he'll keep walking his way towards your baited fucking lure as it skitters away at every turn until you're ready to bite. Doesn't that make you ashamed? To scavenge off our lives when they're all we have? What is the point of you? You son of a bitch! You wet, dead-eyed bastard!
From The Silt Verses: Chapter 13: So Let Me Dwell Eternal
Hhhhhhh Carpenter. Carpenter who hates the government and the official gods for taking her family and her life from her, and hates the Trawler-Man for doing the same; who loves her river and loves and resents her god; who wants so, so, SO desperately for it all to mean something and is so, so afraid that it doesn’t. Who saw the apocalyptic miracle she deep down didn’t seem to really believe would ever come so believing in it was a distant hope of abstract retribution against the world, but now that it’s real and its power can be hers she doesn’t want it and doesn’t want anyone to ever wield it. Who just wants to be alone and at peace on her sacred river and wants all the pain to mean something beyond just more pain. Who wants the Trawler-Man to be understandable, to be working towards some divine justice and truth, but is afraid that he doesn’t mean anything, doesn't want anything, he just exists. Just another petty god, like the Hollow, like the Lady of Locked Hearts, who’s just a randomly and inhumanly destructive force of nature. And who’s terrified that dedicating her life to him was pointless, that it was just reopening an old wound again and again and again to try to make it mean something, and it never did, it just hurt.
