a kinda sorta au/missing moment of the Dads in 3x03
“...and Nancy’s already taken off for Portland. She said she’d be back for dinner.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it,” Ryan quips, scrolling through his phone on his way to the coffeemaker. The Drew house has a Mr. Coffee machine that’s older than his daughter, but it’s somehow the best coffee he’s ever had.
Carson snorts, pot already in hand to pour into Ryan’s mug. He’s only been crashing here a few weeks, but he somehow has a specific mug, just like Nancy and Carson. It’s kinda nice.
“I got a deposition, plus lots to get done at the office,” Carson says, topping off his own coffee. “Do you think you could do the kitchen and the laundry today?”
Ryan resists the urge to roll his eyes. He appreciates Carson putting him up here, he does, but he’s not a child.
At least Carson isn’t the one that made the chore wheel. That was all Nancy.
“I think I can handle it,” he says flatly.
Carson smiles at him over the lip of his coffee mug, like he can read Ryan’s mind, then his eyes drift to the digital clock on the microwave. “I’ve got to get going. See you later.”
It happens so fast that Ryan doesn’t even see it coming. One second he’s taking a breath to say his own See you later, the next, Carson’s lips are touching his. Carson is kissing him.
And before he can even react to that, Carson jolts back like he’s been shocked. “I am so sorry,” he stammers out. “I don’t even – it was just habit or something –”
“No, no, it’s cool,” Ryan says quickly. “Don’t worry about it.”
Carson Drew, Esquire—the cool, collected professional attorney—claps a hand to his forehead, the most flustered Ryan has ever seen him. It’s kind of…charming actually. “Force of habit. Sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Ryan says, finding that he really means it. Carson was married for over twenty years, that’s a lot of habit to break.
“Okay,” Carson swallows nervously, scratching the back of his neck. “So I’ll just…”
Ryan bobs his head in a nod, watching Carson flee the kitchen as fast as humanly possible.
Force of habit. Ryan was married too, but he can’t say he’d ever known anything like that. Talking over coffee, kisses goodbye over the kitchen counter.
Sounds nice, though.
