Don’t get me wrong, I love all the trans Jax stuff I’ve been seeing (love doesn’t cover it. I have about a gigabyte of trans Jax art on my a folder on my phone, and that’s after compression) but I’ve only got a couple of Leeroy! And there’s NO good out of circus Leeroy AU’s/comics!

Talking about FunnyBunny Again

I'm still a FunnyBunny shipper, even if it's not my favorite ship. And admittedly, some of the ideas that some of the other shippers have about Pomni and Jax don't really appeal to me. I'm just gonna conjure up a list of shipper oddities for me to comment on.

1: Not a "straight couple"

I guess part of why I like the reveal of "transfemme Jax" is that it was such a huge bait-and-switch to the shippers as a whole. While FunnyBunny was commonly dismissed as "hetslop" by its detractors, now we can count the ship as yuri. Say it with me, now...

"That's what everyone wants, a straight couple!"

I am more open to FunnyBunny if Jax is in "trans mode" because the general idea seems to be that she's a much better person than her closeted cis boy-presenting self. FunnyBunny would be a lot healthier as wlw, it seems like.

Although, with the "trans Jax twist" having its own detractors for various reasons, I wonder about if there are people who prefer Jax as a man, thus a slight undertone of heteronormativity is kept in their shipping of FunnyBunny. Unless they mean as a trans man, so it's still queer, but I kind of worry about there being trans erasure in certain corners of the shipper base.

2: Where's Butch Pomni??

One little pet peeve I have is that in some fanarts, particularly from FunnyBunny shippers, Pomni is depicted in a more feminine style of clothing. Like, "princess" levels of femininity. The reason it bothers me is that in canon, Pomni has a tomboy side to her, outright leaning butch with her "noir" outfit--which is strikingly similar to Jax's, mind you. Heck, I remember Goose herself lamenting how not that many people draw "butch Pomni" in their fanarts. If anything, Pomni is more of a knight. It also plays into my distaste for how "straight" FunnyBunny is portrayed at times. The reality is that there's plenty of gender nonconformity involved; on Jax's end, even if you're not fond of tfem!Jax, there's no denying that even as a guy, that rabbit is pretty damn feminine. Honestly, whether in "masc" or "femme" mode, Jax goes together best with butch Pomni.

3: Jax isn't jealous

Some people also portray Jax as a "jealous lover" sort of person in their ship stuff. This one, I find rather out of character--Jax doesn't show any sort of clingy possessiveness in canon, not even in her tug-of-war with Ragatha in Ep. 5; if anything, she just wanted to piss her off by getting closer to Pomni. As a matter of fact, Jax is more of the attachment-avoidant type, which is one of my favorite traits of her character. She wouldn't be the type to be possessive, rather, she'd internalize a bunch of reasons why no one would be in love with her, least of all Pomni.

Conversely, both Ragatha and especially Caine seem to be more of "the jealous type". Ragatha in canon angsts over how she and Pomni seem to be growing distant as the latter gets closer to Jax--albeit some of it is for more dramatic reasons--and Caine is definitely the clingy type, desperate for validation and approval from others. If there's any character in Digital Circus that can be made into "jealous lovers", Ragatha and Caine are your best bets, not Jax.

4: In-universe pushback

An opportunity that I think the shippers tend to waste a lot is, how would everyone else in the Circus react to Pomni and Jax hooking up? Specifically when Jax is in "asshole cis boy" mode. Like, the shippers just have the other characters automatically show support for Pomni and Jax's relationship, which is pretty damn out-of-character. More plausibly, Ragatha, Gangle, and Zooble would hate it.

Ragatha, as I already mentioned, was depressed and concerned about Pomni and Jax growing closer. In addition, though, a lot people think Ragatha has a crush on Pomni. So it would be an especially cruel thing to experience for Ragatha; seeing a friend you love grow closer to a guy you distrust immensely, and then she hooks up with said asshole? Ragatha would Abstract for sure.

Gangle would have considerably mixed feelings. She appreciated Pomni's kindness back in Ep. 4, so seeing her be friendly with her bully would definitely confuse Gangle. She might not necessarily be opposed to it, considering her complicated view of Jax, but she wouldn't really support it either.

Zooble would be the most vocally-opposed to the pairing. They regularly clash with Jax, and unlike Ragatha or Pomni, are not privy to his "lighter" moments. They might also disapprove of Pomni being that close with Jax, and with how cynical they tend to be, Zooble could accuse Pomni of being an enabler for Jax.

Really, the only characters who wouldn't oppose to Pomni and Jax hooking up are Kinger (he's too understanding, god bless him) and Caine (he'd likely make a "dating adventure" for the two), not helped by the fact that they're both not as privy to Jax's more unlikeable moments. And that's where the nuance may come in--even if Pomni and Jax like each other, what about the three who distrust and dislike Jax immensely?

I'm sorry if you happen to like the FunnyBunny stuff that I critiqued above--I have no dislike for the ship, I enjoy it from time to time. Unfortunately, my view of it doesn't line up with more common interpretations of the ship, which is why I tend not to interact with the fanbase a lot. Variety is the spice of life, and when it comes to FunnyBunny, I'd like it if I saw stuff that adds flavor to the pairing and makes it as unique as possible.
