Okay obviously TADC isn't a perfect show there's a lot of room to criticize it, but one complaint I've seen a lot that really bothers me is about Jax being bad representation. Obviously not everyone is going to connect with every character but once again a lot of the reasons she's been criticized baffle me and I want to complain about two of them specifically so I'm going to go do that now.
The first is just Jax being a bad person makes her bad representation. Obviously she is but this isn't a problem. Being queer doesn't inherently make someone a good person, and there's a lot of struggles people can go through figuring themselves out, if they ever do. Being queer can be messy and hard, these aren't feelings that should be watered down to become palatable to cis people. I'm not literally Jax in every single way, but we do share some coping mechanisms and the feelings that drive her actions are so real to me. That's the fundamental point of representation. It isn't to market us to cishet people and show us off. It's to connect with queer people, or whatever group is being represented, and creating stories they might not see elsewhere.
This sorta ties in to the second, in that Jax needed to have a happy ending specifically because not enough other media exists that give characters like Jax spotlight. The thing is while I would have loved a happy ending for Jax, it wasn't needed for her story. She's a warning sign, a character you aren't supposed to emulate. She's similar to Owen from I Saw the TV Glow in that way, yet this isn't a complaint I've seen against ISTTVG for some reason. Jax's story is a story that's just as valid to be told as one with a happy ending, and while you may have preferred that it doesn't make this one less important to be told. I've seen people say that yes, Jax should have had a happy ending, specifically because of how other media treats trans women. I think this is missing that this show is literally made by a trans woman, Gooseworx is trans, she's not responsible for what big studios do. This is a personal story created by a trans woman and that's good. Goose told a story to fit her vision and that isn't something that can or should be taken away. If she wanted to tell a happier story where Jax accepted herself then that would be great, but she didn't and that's fine. Expressing yourself is one of the biggest reasons people create things and Goose should have the space to say what she wants to saw regardless of what else is going on in other media.
End of rant. TLDR weird trans woman on the internet complains about other people's complaints that she doesn't like because they're dumb and bad.
