It's perfectly possible to say you're proud of someone without elevating yourself above them. This is why friends can be proud of each other... or why one member of a team can be proud of the rest of the group after achieving something difficult. I think your anon may be carrying a bit of baggage when it comes to other people's approval, adding negative connotations to positive statements like that.

I don’t even think about ME when I say I’m proud of someone else haha. But well, some people have different priorities in life and are that focused in themselves that they think about themselves when they shouldn’t ahhaha.
