“Fangshi.” The name comes out sickly sweet, dripping with the honey Cassidy bestowed so lavishly upon her fans. Her hand snakes across their chest, pulling them in.

Prey, Fangshi thought. They were prey, and Cassidy was about to have her next meal.

“Talk to me, darling,” Cassidy purred, her voice low. “Or do you wish to remain silent forever?”

Still, Fangshi doesn’t speak. Cassidy’s perfume is overpowering, and it fills them up with the scent of... lavender and vanilla. It screamed of money and power. Typical of Cassidy, really.

“’Communication is key’,” Cassidy parrots, “or have you forgotten the speech?”

“No,” Fangshi says. “No, I haven’t.”

A wicked smile. “Good.”

“A question for a question.” Cassidy twirls a strand of hair, her gaze boring into Fangshi’s, who looks away after a second. “I go first.”

They don’t answer.

Cassidy leans in, her lips brushing their ear. “Why are you scared of me?”

“Can’t you ask another question?” Fangshi squirms and slides down, taking a seat on the cold cement. The hallway is still empty. They have a sinking suspicion that Cassidy picked it for that exact reason.

“A question for a question,” Cassidy repeats. “No refunds, no exchanging, nothing.”

A pause. Then—

“I’m scared because I don’t know what you’ll do next.”

“Singer-songwriter Cassidy Tan is Cadian’s most successful superstar, after only a year in the industry,” the reporter says. Cassidy pauses the video and leans back against the sofa, humming to herself.

Jasper nudges the door open with a foot and staggers in, holding several bags of groceries in each hand. “Your order.”

“Thank you, Jasper.”

“Why can’t you just order in?” Jasper sets the bags on the counter with a loud thud, and Cassidy sighs.

“Success makes money, sure, but that doesn’t mean I have to spend it.” Jasper waves his hand at the apartment they were in, one of the five Cassidy owned. “Fine, other than houses. But you get what I mean.”

“Actually, I don’t.” Jasper is about to say more, but Cassidy has already resumed the video and gone back to watching people talk about her. He signs and begins to unpack everything for her.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Fangshi asks, looking nervously over their shoulder at the empty hallway.

“Do you think this is a bad idea?” Cassidy counters, grabbing their wrist and tugging them into an alcove. “Who is around to stop us?”

“I don’t know.”

“Precisely. Besides, who will report me?” Her eyes glittered as she cast a wicked smile at them.

Fangshi says nothing, only removes Cassidy’s hand from theirs and pauses for a fraction of a second before pulling her into a hug.

Cassidy’s cold lips met theirs, but her gaze was blank, unfocused. And theirs? They avoided eye contact entirely.

Cassidy nods along, but her mind has wandered to a different class, with a different instructor, but the words are all the same.

“Be a leader, and the world is yours.”

The world will be hers, eventually. She’ll begin with Cadian, take over the industry. And then she’ll command everyone else.

“Cassidy, you'll lead for this song.”

Cassidy smiles and stands.
