Spells - Witchcraft Wednesday!

Anyone knows that Witches = Spells. Spellcasting, Spellcrafting, Spellwork, to Spell. Charms, Bewitchments, Enchantments, Spells. You hear these terms thrown around like confetti, but what do they actually mean? What is a Spell anyways? How is one performed?

A Spell in my experience is a prayer with its work boots on. It’s asking the Universe to help manifest your desire – but with a twist. Traditionally, across all religions and practices, a prayer is a petition to a God or Higher Power to benefit the outcome of whoever performs it. When I think prayer, I think folded hands, and asking for what I want. Seems simple right? A Spell is a little more than that. From my experience, just ASKING the Universe, God, Source for what you want will only take you halfway. One of my favourite Disney movies is The Princess And The Frog, in which the main character’s father gives her a little lesson about wishing on a star, or for this purpose a prayer, “...that old star can only take you part of a way. You got to help him with some hard work of your own.” This is exactly the basis of Spellcraft to me. Not only are you asking the Universe for what it is you want, you’re also taking the necessary steps to follow through to ensure it gets done.

In my Spells, I use a combination if items and tools to help me with my work. I’ll use candles, herbs, crystals, oils, incense, consecrated water, salt and any and all combinations of those items and more that I feel are necessary for that particular working. There are so many factors that can go into a Spell if you wish, such as day of the week, time of day, moon phase, time of year, which direction you’re facing, everything down to the most minute detail, you name it. It all depends on the Witch.

Enchantments and Charms work the same, sometimes yielding in the production of an object, such as a Spell Jar. This barely scratches the surface on the mechanics, but they really are dependent on the performer of the Spell, so in that sense, there really are no rules – I always say to do whatever feels right – you can’t go wrong when you trust your instincts.

I like to Charm my jewelry for protection or a boost of energy. Sometimes I enchant my makeup and clothes to radiate confidence. Magic is everything. Everything we do, we are, we perceive, it’s everything. A Spell is just a manifestation of that Magic.
