Gig Review: Matt Corby (Secret Garden Show, Harrow, North London)
For those of you have been paying attention to Matt Corby over the past months you may have heard word of his ‘secret garden’ shows. Matt has been performing these shows for a while now and for those of us monitoring his Facebook page, we heard that Matt would now be bringing the Secret Garden Shows to London. This would be his first London secret garden show and a chance for the luckier fans to watch the mesmerizing Matt perform acoustically in an intimate garden party provided by our hugely welcoming hosts.
Wide-smiling guests began to arrive around 4 o’clock to a garden swimming with bean bags and gazebos to what was a surprisingly warm day in North Harrow. The rain managed to hold off as the first of the hand picked support artists, Bella Padley, took to the microphone with acoustic in hand and provided some classic covers alongside a number of her own beautifully written originals. This girl is definitely one to watch and this stunning performance with a great tone and range showed the lucky few exactly why this is the case.
Following Bella, with the sun still just holding on was Scott, the front man of band Evanjack. Having not heard of the band prior to Saturday I was blown away by Scott’s stage/gazebo presence and the way in which his voice brought complete silence to the garden. His range of original songs did not disappoint. Scott also managed to break what appeared to be an ‘antique’ bird cage…which he promised to fix but I’m unsure as to whether he ever got round to keeping his promise. Aside from this, an utterly flawless performance.
On came the rain.
Following a reshuffling of the garden gazebo set up and an onslaught of rain, the main event of the day took hold of the restless garden. Just prior to this a famous face was spotted entering the garden; Caggie Dunlop from Made in Chelsea. Clearly with a fine taste in music, she sat amongst the rest as Matt Corby took to the garden decking underneath an umbrella to perform. Every person in the audience sat in awe amongst the sea of bean bags and blankets and simply watched an inspiring set from a truly great artist. The greatest commotion began when Matt started to play perhaps his best known song, Brother, which I recommend you listen to. Now. The passion behind Matt’s voice and the way in which he uses this in each and every song made this a special evening. The English weather began to take its toll on our Aussie artists, who really was not happy with cold fingers hampering his guitar playing ability…or so he said, however none of the fans really seemed to think so. Finally the panic was over, following a number of offerings of gloves, as our hosts dug out a patio heater.
This day was undoubtedly one of the best days out for a very long time for all concerned. Caggie herself tweeted it as ‘the best day ever’. These fans will remember this for a long time, and they really were true fans as Matt played one song, and as he finished asked, ‘How do you guys even know that song?’. Due to the cold weather Matt said that this would be his last garden show in the UK, however, we sincerely hope it is not. A fantastic show from a master of his trade. A must see.
