Music, it's all about niche, niche and more niches
Music and niches is it too late to categorize your music genre? In a word, No! Do it often. Do it now. With music so segmented you need to find your identity. You find that identity by aligning your music with a demographic or music type. Once you identify that genre focus on that fan base. Sound easy? It is and sometimes not as easy. Remember musical taste is a personal identity. Creating a bridge between these identities is the key. Keep at it long enough and you will be able to create a market ready product for your customer base.
Sure music can be made for you but are you really at the point where you can dictate the shots? Or are you a slave to your customer. Like most we are the latter so catering to that base is paramount to success.
Listen to me or not. If you listen the worst that will happen is you have modest success. If you choose not to heed the advice your product may be destined to be a great magnet for dust on one of CD Baby's many shelves; waiting for a customer.
Personally, be proactive. Don't follow -- lead. Lead your customers to you and your music. Create for them something they can identify and you have yourself a customer.
