Best Songs/Albums of 2012: #2
#2! #2!! I can't believe we're down to #2!!! Well, I won't keep you waiting - here they are, the second-best album and song of 2012:
#2 Song of 2012
Calexico - "Splitter"
There are some songs that stir something deep inside me every time I hear them, as if awakening some dormant part of my soul I had long forgotten. "Cathedrals" by Jump Little Children, "Name" by Goo Goo Dolls, "So Long Marianne" by Leonard Cohen...these are just a few such records that have cast their spell over me. "Songs for the ages," I call them. With "Splitter," I knew I had found aother such gem on the very first listen. There's something so graceful, so enchantingly beautiful about this song that it almost brings tears to my eyes. And if that ain't what good music is all about, I don't know what is.
I still have much exploration to do when it comes to Calexico. I love their Spanish-tinged cover of The Damned's "Alone Again Or," and I started to traverse their 2001 EP Even My Sure Things Fall Through before trivial matters like finals and my job search commanded my attention. But I will most definitely be listening to their new album Algiers and, with any luck, will discover many more life-affirming, harmony-rich slices of alt-country bliss. Hells yeah.
#2 Album of 2012
Sleeper Agent - "Celabrasion"
Sleeper Agent, straight out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, were one of my first great finds of 2012. Their jittery, fun-loving video for the raucous "Get It Daddy" instantly grabbed my attention when I caught it on mtvU. I was most pleased to discover the rest of the tracks on Celabrasion were just as infectious, brimming with huge vocal hooks, blazing power chords, and boundless enthusiasm. From the simmering energy and stadium-sized chorus of "Force A Smile" to the prowling, down-and-dirty crawl of "Some White Blinds," these six young musicians have found a way to create pure, unadulterated joy in audio form. After being named a "Band to Watch" by Rolling Stone, performing on Jimmy Fallon, and opening for fun. and Weezer, the band is poised to reach even greater heights in 2013. Lord knows I'll be rocking out to their feel-good anthems for a long, long time.
