Celtic Serpent Folkore

In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, a day to celebrate the Patron Saint of Ireland, as well as the Saint famous for driving out snakes, I decided to make a post briefly touching upon some serpents in Celtic folklore.

First, a fun fact. Ireland never had any snakes. It should also be noted that some accounts say that Saint Patrick rid Ireland not of all snakes, but rather all reptiles or all venomous creatures.

Starting in Ireland were the Oillipheist (Great Worm), sea serpents who were said to inhabit the rivers and lakes of Ireland. In one legend, the River Shannon is created by the fleeing of an Oillipheist from Saint Patrick. In another, one eats a piper, only to have the musician play his way out of the dragon’s belly.

Caoranach was a female Oillipheist, born from a hairy worm found within the leg bone of a hag. She grew to monstrous proportions before being slain or driven out by Saint Patrick.

In some Celtic iconography, the horned god Cernunnos is seen associating with a ram horned serpent.

The Pictish Beast seen on some Pictish stones is an unclear animal, but may represent a sort of sea dragon.

Cirein-croin was a monstrously huge sea serpent, large enough to eat seven whales in one go as a meal.

Green Dragons Silver Fibula

This is a midium sized (d = 47 mm, needle lenght = 60 mm) fibula with Celtic dragons. It is encrusted with two light green transparent perdots (chrysolites of Brazil). The dragons in Celtic mythology represented Earth. They were guardians of the Gates to Underworld. The green stones in the tones of young grass symbolize the connection to nature and Earth.

Dragon symbolism was seen in the legends and artwork of the ancient Celts. The most powerful of Druid animal symbols, the dragon, representing all of creation, symbolizes power, hidden wisdom, vitality, new thresholds, fertility, inspiration, imagination, purification, wealth and the treasures of the subconscious mind. Jörmungandr (sometimes called the Midgard serpent or snake) is a giant beast in Norse Mythology. Jörmungandr is the middle child of Loki and the giantess Angrboða. It is said Jörmungandr will be killed by Thor at Ragnarok , but Thor will only walk nine paces before dying himself, of the serpent's poisonous venom.
