Sometimes you mess up a cup and it makes it not food safe, but then you are kinda happy because that means you get to keep it ❤ #ceramic #pottery #ceramicart #ceramicpottery https://www.instagram.com/p/CL9wfFLhUML/?igshid=1hpfbxku6g8vd

There is an issue with being a ceramics artist and being horribly impatient. You must devise a crazy plan like this to prevent crazing of your glaze. What's crazing you ask? When your glazed pieces, usually gloss glazed, begin to get small cracks due to an extreme temperature change and the glaze contracting. Well, a kiln left overnight can still be over 100°F after 10 hours, or in this case 140°F. Going from that, to the brisk 59°F of an American northeastern fall morning equals bad news. First you hear the tell tale pinging sounds, then the panic and scrambling to get them in a warmer temperature. Even inside my home which is usually in the low 70's was too cold. My solution? Pieces wrapped in fleece, then the whole basket wrapped in canvas, and lastly a cozy heating pad I will be SLOWLY turning down throughout the day.
It’s been a year and a half since my last kiln firing session, I have a lot to remember about the do's and don'ts, plus the quirks of my kiln. Learn from my mistakes friends, BE PATIENT, even if your DYING to see the first pieces you have made in over a year! Wait, crack the kiln slowly, give your pieces ample time to cool. Otherwise, use my heating pad idea! I think it's working, at least I don't hear pinging. Give me a few hours I'll let you know if it really worked!
