Kelly Rowland Returns to Perform at Caribbean Fashionweek 2013

Grammy award winning and fashion icon Kelly Rowland is set to return to the Caribbean’s premier fashion and style event Caribbean Fashionweek. The event will celebrate its 13th year at the National Indoor Sports Centre, Kingston, Jamaica on June 6-10. The former Destiny’s Child star and solo artist is excited to present a full concert performance on Sat June 8, Kelly said “I am looking forward once again to bringing my personal style, as well as my music, to the Caribbean’s big fashion event.” Kelly is currently working on her upcoming fourth studio album ‘Talk a Good Game’ and is expected to be the usual major draw for both international press and music lovers, inside and outside the Caribbean.

The World Heads To CFW June 6

                      Designers, supermodels, superstars, celebrities, stylists and press will start arriving in Jamaica next week for Caribbean Fashionweek, scheduled for June 6-10 this year. The 13th renewal of the event takes place at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston. Events will also be held at the Spanish Court Hotel, PULS8 in New Kingston, Villa Ronai in Stony Hill and the Red Bones Blues Cafe.

From all indications, this year’s event is expected to exceed all previous standards set, with added glamour, more glitz and many new stylists and trends hitting the runway.  Patrons should come expecting to be tantalized and intoxicated by the best of the best within the Caribbean and Internationally.

2013 marks the first year that a designer from Zimbabwe will show at CFW. Top stylist from that country Sabina Mutsvati will show a collection highlighting the current quality of Zimbabwean fashion to the regional gathering. Award winning British designer and Vogue fave, Gavin Douglas, returns to show a full collection at CFW for the first time in 4 years. In recent renewals, Douglas has showed small capsule collections, or has come only as arbiter of the CFW Emerging Designer Award, won last year by Cayman’s Tigerlily.

Out of Ethiopia, collections from top stylists Mafi and Fitkirte Addis as well as supermodel Yardanos will grace the runway. Ethiopian superstar Kuri will open for American pop sensation Kelly Rowland. In previous years Nigerian designer Deola Sagoe has shown exquisite collections at CFW. However, with both Zimbabwe and Ethiopia on show this year, CFW is clearly building a fashion bridge between Africa and the Caribbean.

Also returning to CFW are Trinidad’s finest. Claudia Pegus and Heather Jones, both award winning designers, rated among the very best in the Caribbean, return after a 4 and 5 year hiatus respectively. They will be joined by trendsetting stylists Robert Young of the Cloth, as well as fellow countrymen Saleem Samuels and the Wadada Movement.

Kim Simplis-Barrow, wife of the Prime Minister of Belize and that country’s Special Envoy for Women and Children, heads a delegation to Caribbean Fashionweek from Belize. The delegation will include officials, designers and models from that country. While in Jamaica, Mrs Barrow and her team will visit CFW events and participate in such activities as the Business Forum and designer workshops. She will also meet with local officials, especially those responsible for creative industry development locally.

Legendary Sheila E. for CFW Sun June 9th

Music legend Sheila Escovedo, populary known as Sheila E., will perform live with her band at Caribbean Fashionweek on Sunday June 9. The iconic musician, singer of the hugely popular “Glamourous Life” and drummer for the incomparable Prince,has combined careers of singer, song-writer, arranger, drummer, band member and, in recent years, musical director for the likes of Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.

She has packed a multi-faceted career in her relatively short years. However, she started early. Sheila picked up the drumsticks and started making music at the precocious age of three, while watching her legendary father, percussionist Pete Escovedo rehearse.  Sheila delivered her first solo performance to a live audience two years later and has since established herself as one of the most talented percussionist/drummers and vocalists in the world.

Sheila E became a top session and touring musician before the age of 20, performing and/or recording with George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Con Funk Shun and many others.  She played with Marvin Gaye on his final world tour, and toured and/or recorded with Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Gloria Estefan, Babyface, Patti LaBelle, Steve Nicks, Jennifer Lopez and Kanye West among others. In the 1980’s, Sheila's friend Prince helped catapult her to her own pop superstardom. Her obvious talent and hits like “The Glamorous Life” and “Love Bizarre,” plus her pivotal work on other Prince-related projects made her an international star.  Particularly proud moments include her participation in the “We Are The World” sessions and a performance on the Oscars with Placido Domingo. In recent years, she has served as musical director for the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce Knowles, as well as playing drums with Ringo Starr in his last two tours.  Her producing and arranging talents have been showcased on the Image Awards, Latin Grammy Awards, Summer Olympics, WOW Awards, ALMA's, and on countless television programs – including becoming television's first female musical director for Magic Johnson's short-lived “The Magic Hour.” Sheila's enthusiasm for “passing it on” to a new generation of players led her to design “ClassE” Costume Series for adults, and The Sheila E.’s Player Series,”a new line of percussion instruments for kids, both with TOCA Kaman Music. Despite the demands of her commitment to making music, Sheila maintains a heavy involvement in charitable organizations, most notably as co-chair of the Lil' Angel Bunny Foundation, focusing on implementing music and the arts as an alternative method of therapy for abused, abandoned children. “There are so many children and young adults who need our help,” she says, “and we're trying to help them get their lives together, by building their confidence through music and the arts. Its just another way for me to do Gods will.   I believe we are here to help people in our lifetime. We must give of ourselves to truly live.”
