I rather wish we'd gotten a conversation between Chakotay and Janeway after he was mind controlled into stealing her ship in 7x04. She was able to break Tuvok out of his mind control, but not Chakotay, and it bothers me that they didn't discuss that 😕 I like to think that if Chakotay had been the one instructed to kill her, it would have broken the mind control too, but I don't love that we'll never know.

Just curious about who's still in this fandom.
The way Chakotay hesitates slightly before putting his lips on Janeway's to perform CPR is killing me. Like he's spent so long wishing he could kiss her again(I refuse to believe there was at least no offscreen kissing), and the idea of pressing their lips together for a different reason breaks his heart. Especially because he's not going to feel her push her lips against his as well. All the conflicting emotions he must feel. Idek. Putting the question to the masses. What do y'all think he was feeling in that moment?
On ep one, and it literally brought tears to my eyes watching Janeway firmly tell Chakotay that he would speak to ask members of her crew with respect. He didn't even argue with her. He wasn't a dick. Simply respected her authority.

So I noticed something that's been pretty frustrating. After Seven came aboard, a lot of the subtext between Chakotay and Janeway just stopped. It makes sense, from what I understand via interviews Seven came on board because Kate Mulgrew put her foot down about Janeway and Chakotay being in a relationship. Dgmw, it's not like Seven and Chakotay had anything special to replace it, but there's significantly less subtext between Janeway and Chakotay. I think the writers and the actors stopped putting it in because Kate made it clear that that was never going to happen. It didn't disappear entirely, but it went from being there almost every episode to once or twice every five or six episodes. I'm still at the beginning of s6, so maybe it increases later on(it's been too long since I've watched the show to know for certain), but I'm sad about how much less subtext there is. Still, I'll keep writing about the subtext in each episode. I'll put out another one tonight or tomorrow.
Episode 2, Season 1-Parallax
This is the first episode in which we get to see Chakotay and Janeway working together as First Officer and Captain, and it very much sets them up for success. The main conflict is whether or not B'Elanna is suited to be Chief Engineer. Janeway is surprised when he suggests her, and then when they're on the bridge and need help from Engineering, Chakotay calls B'Elanna first. Janeway is clearly scandalized, and calls to her Starfleet engineer instead, putting him in charge. She and Chakotay go into her ready room and they have an argument about whether the Maquis can or should have any command positions. It gets fairly heated, and towards the end, he says, a little more gently and with a slight sadness that he's trying to help her, and is sorry that she can't see that. I think that though he cares about his people and wants to take care of them, helping Janeway integrate them and run a successful ship is one of his top priorities. Despite the fact that Janeway is skeptical of B'Elanna, I think she realizes that Chakotay has her best interests at heart.
Unfortunately, when she tries to talk to B'Elanna later and get to know her, B'Elanna's temper flares, and it goes poorly. Still, Janeway agrees to allow B'Elanna to be in the meeting later in the episode in which they're discussing how to escape the black hole. This time, Janeway gets to witness B'Elanna's brilliance, and she doesn't ignore it. Right as everyone is leaving the ready room, Chakotay glances back at Janeway to gauge her feelings. She smiles.
Which makes him give her his soft smile, one that just grows softer over time
After Janeway makes B'Elanna Chief Engineer, she watches her from the deck above as B'Elanna makes her amends with Carey, the Starfleet Engineer who would have been Chief Engineer if it wasn't for her. Chakotay joins Janeway, asking, a little guardedly, if Janeway is checking up on B'Elanna. Janeway simply says that she's observing, and that B'Elanna will definitely have to face some opposition:
She then adds:
Their connection thus deepened, Chakotay asks if she would have served under him if they were on the Maquis ship. She grins and says that as Captain, she gets to keep some things to herself. And they share the first of what will be many looks of fond amusement:

From the top: Episode 1, Season 1-Caretaker
This will be a long running series analyzing the relationship between Chakotay and Kathryn Janeway. In my opinion, they have one of the most compelling relationships on Star Trek: Voyager. It's a pity that the show never went through with putting them together, though I understand Kate Mulgrew's resistance to it. Regardless, there was a great deal of subtext and some actual text to their romantic feelings for each other. As I am rewatching this and losing my shit the tiniest bit over each glance between them, I've decided to document it. I hope there are some who will appreciate my efforts. Here we go!
In the first episode, Janeway's crew and Chakotay's crew are transported to the Delta Quadrant. Harry Kim and B'Elanna Torres were kidnapped by the Caretaker and sent to the Ocampa. Janeway suggests an alliance between her crew and Chakotay's, to which he agrees. This is their first real interaction:
She shows a fierceness that Chakotay is impressed enough by not to challenge her. She decides to send an away team down to the planet to try to rescue Harry and B'Elanna, but checks with Chakotay first to make sure that they're on the same page. He nods his agreement.
His expression is still guarded, but there's a slight softening, and a bit of respect. I believe he thought her plan was a good one, and appreciated the fact that she took his opinion into account, despite the fact that she was a Starfleet Captain and he was an outlaw whom she'd been sent to arrest.
I think this is the point in which he starts to have true respect for her. She's showing bravery, selflessness, and compassion, all traits that he values. He shows this respect here:
It doesn't matter to him that he was the Captain of his ship. He's decided in this moment to follow her.
Now they're one crew. They look at each other with tentative though still guarded trust. However, after she turns away, we see the first signs of Chakotay's growing affection for her:
